The Parallel of Bread from Heaven (John 6:26-31)
The Parallel of Bread from Heaven (John 6:26-31)
Both the feeding in the wilderness and the feeding of the five thousand were symbolic promises to satisfy the people’s greater spiritual need.
The purpose of bread from heaven was to teach dependence upon the Lord.
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
3. The Jews were focused on the temporal, but Christ was teaching of the eternal.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
The Promise of Satisfaction (John 6:32-35)
The Promise of Satisfaction (John 6:32-35)
Christ promised spiritual satisfaction.
This promise is pictured in the fact that the people ate the bread until they were filled (John 6:11)
Christ always has more to offer than we can receive (twelve baskets left over—John 6:12-13).
Christ’s promised eternal security.
Christ promised that all the Father gives to Him will come, and he will never cast them out!
If you understand your need for Christ, you are being drawn by the Holy Spirit.
Your salvation is eternally secure!
Christ’s promised eternal salvation.
For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
4. Salvation, as pictured in the communion, involves believing and receiving.
C. The Problem of Unbelief
C. The Problem of Unbelief
What was the Jews’ unbelief problem?
Their focus was on this world. (more free food)
They assumed they knew who Jesus was. (whose father and mother we know)
They did not understand Jesus’ word. (about believing and receiving his flesh and blood).
