Theme Verse:
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

God cares deeply about your rest.

RECAP PREVIOUS WEEKS IN SERIES
Last week we started looking at Psalm 23 as this beautiful picture of what it means to find rest in the Lord centered around the image of the sheep and the shepherd.

Rest begins with trust

We have to grow in our relationship as the sheep of the Good Shepherd.
CONNECT THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE
Today we are looking at the next part of this Psalm as we see how the Good Shepherd brings peace to the areas of our life that rob us of rest.

SHARE: What is something you have really wanted in your life?

1. Our constant striving for more robs us of rest.

Text
Psalm 23:1 ESV
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Luke 12:15 ESV
15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Work is not the enemy of rest, the desires of our eyes and heart are what rob us of rest.
Ecclesiastes 5:10–12 ESV
10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.

The world is a trap and the bait is that more will ever be enough.

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Application: Step 1- Decide to stop chasing the lie of more.

SHARE: Who is someone who has taken great care of you?

2. God will take care all of our needs.

Text
Psalm 23:2 ESV
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Matthew 6:32–33 ESV
32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

God is better at providing what we need than we are.

Application: Step 2 - Inventory of your 3 T’s (time, talents, and treasures).

3. Rest comes when we find contentment in him

Text
Psalm 23:3 ESV
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
The striving does more than produce physical exhaustion it tears apart your soul.
Philippians 4:11–13 ESV
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Rest isn’t found in the field or in the stream, it is found in the shepherd.

Application: Step 3 - Choose daily for him to be enough.

SHARE: “He is enough”
