The church has always had problems.
The New Testament holds the solutions.
What are some of the symptoms that there may be a problem?
The Corruption Of Worship
The Corruption Of Worship
The Corinthians, who’s problems are well known, allowed it corrupt their worship (1 Cor. 11:20-22).
20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. 21 For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.
They allowed their prideful divisiveness to corrupt the use of spiritual gifts to promote themselves rather than Christ (1 Cor. 14:26-33, 39-40).
26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
Forsaking The Assembly
Forsaking The Assembly
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
It is a sure sign that the absentee member has forgotten that they are a member of the body of Christ (Heb. 10:19-20).
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
They have forgotten that they were sanctified by the blood of Christ (Heb. 10:21-22).
21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
They have failed to hold fast the confession of their hope (Heb. 10:23).
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
They forfeit the watchful care of their loving brethren (Heb. 10:24).
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
Breakdown Of Leadership
Breakdown Of Leadership
Leaders that desire the preeminence rather than giving Christ the preeminence (3 Jn. 9; Col. 1:18).
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us.
18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Some made false accusations against Paul, desiring to be considered as he was (2 Cor. 11:12-15).
12 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
The Willingness To Compromise God’s Word
The Willingness To Compromise God’s Word
Paul refused to compromise even for an hour (Gal. 2:5).
5 to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
Peter’s willingness to compromise God’s word was based in fear (Gal. 2:11-13).
11 Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
To compromise with error is to be partaker of the error (2 Jn. 9-11).
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
