Christian Home Essentials

Essentials, I would believe that most marriages want to have children, and now after establishing the Christian home tonight we will look at the role of Children within the Christian home, but first a reminder or two.
Christian home starts with a Christian marriage
God created, God controlled covenant bearing marriage that is sanctified.
A Christian marriage entails a Christian husband, and a Christian wife.
God’s word gives duties, responsibilities of both a Christian husband and a Christian wife.
A Christian husband and wife then may become Christian parents
God’s command in the garden was to be fruitful and multiply (Gen1:28)
That would be taking into account that Father will provide for them and raise them in the ways of the Lord.
Mothers would love them and care for them, nurture them within the Christian home.
(Transition) So tonight let’s look what the scripture says “to” the children.

Children “obey” your parents

Did you know that Jesus set a good godly order or direction regarding childhood? He does and the scripture gives us some good instructions for children to know and apply.
Obey your parents in the Lord (Eph6:1)
Ephesians 6:1 NASB95
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Question: Why are children to obey parents?
Obey for it is right.
When it says “in the Lord” that means this is what the Lord would have you do, just as the wife is to submit to her husband as unto the Lord.
Jesus exampled obedience (Lk2:51)
Luke 2:51 NKJV
51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart.
Jesus was subject (obedient) to his parents, is there a better example as to why children should obey their parents? - No
God’s command (Deu5:16)
Deuteronomy 5:16 NASB95
16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Question: what is the command here, and what are the results if you keep the command?
Honor your parents, So you days may be prolonged, and it may go well with you.
(Transition) So Eph6:1 says “for this right” then that means if you do not do it, if you are disobedient, then it is wrong and you are in rebellion to what the Lord wants you can check out (1Sam15:23) and see what God has to say about rebellion.
Obey your parents in all things
All things is pleasing to the Lord (Col3:20)
Colossians 3:20 NASB95
20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Isn’t that what we all want to do, be well-pleasing to the Lord?
Now we do need to take into account that the obedience in accordance to God’s will.
All things in accordance to God’s will (Act5:29)
Acts 5:29 NASB95
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Question: Is there an imperative in this verse?
Yes there is an imperative, it is the word “must”
Obey for look what God’ reveals about disobedience (Exo21:17; Deut21:18-21; Pro30:17)
Exodus 21:17 NASB95
17 “He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
Speak wrong, curse your parents and sure you will be put to death.
Deuteronomy 21:18–19 NASB95
18 “If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, 19 then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown.
Deuteronomy 21:20–21 NASB95
20 “They shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 “Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear.
Put to death by stoning, for must remove evil from midst
Proverbs 30:17 NASB95
17 The eye that mocks a father And scorns a mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.
Don’t roll your eyes at your parents either, that ends badly.
(Transition) just because we no longer, children no longer, just as everyone else no longer live under the O.T. we should not discount what scripture says about obedience, this leads to our next point.

Children: Honor your parents

Did you know that honoring your parents is the first commandment with a promise? So maybe we better take some time to look at what scripture has to say about honoring parents.
Honor both your Father and your mother (Eph6:2; Exo20:12; Pro5:7)
Ephesians 6:2 NASB95
2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
Question: What is the first commandment with a promise?
Honor your Father and Mother
(Transition) so, maybe better give you the commandment.
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Now look at this verse
Proverbs 5:7 NASB95
7 Now then, my sons, listen to me And do not depart from the words of my mouth.
So, listen up, pay attention, apply the words, instructions, wisdom given from the parents. When you apply you are honoring the. Honor your parents out of love, and honor your parents to receive the promise.
Honor to receive the promise (Eph6:1-3; Deut5:16; Pro4:10)
Now keeping things in context (Eph6:1-3)
Ephesians 6:1–3 NASB95
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
Obeying is right (v.1)
Honor is how it is displayed (v.2)
Results in that it may go well with you. (v.3)
Don’t forget application is not an option it is a command.
Deuteronomy 5:16 NASB95
16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Oh wait there is more.
Proverbs 4:10 NASB95
10 Hear, my son, and accept my sayings And the years of your life will be many.
Just want to help emphasis the importance and the blessing.
G.O.D. (Good Orderly Directions) (Pro6:20-23)
Proverbs 6:20–21 NASB95
20 My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; 21 Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck.
Question: What are you to do with the command (v.20)?
You are to observe the commandment, you are not to forsake the teaching.
Question: How do you do it (v.21)?
You are to bind them, you are to tie them. On your heart and around your neck.
Proverbs 6:22–23 NASB95
22 When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
Question: where are you to do it (v.22)?
Where you walk, when you sleep, when awake
Question: Why are you to do it (v.23)?
It is a lamp, it is a light and they are for a way of life.
(Transition) Parents who love their children, who do not provoke or exasperate, but raise up in the ways of the Lord open the door for a child to obey and honor their parents and be open to the parents wisdom and care, vs. God’s wrath for disobedience. - we are all children, just some much older and one day will need our children to take care of the old children and that leads to the next point.

Children: Support your parents

Yes, you read that, heard that right, we are to take care of one another, so let’s take a few minutes to glean from scripture about this topic.
It was taught by Jesus (Mk7:6-13)
Look at the words of Christ here and I think you can see the implication.
Mark 7:6–7 NASB95
6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 7 But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’
Mark 7:8–9 NASB95
8 “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
Mark 7:10–11 NASB95
10 “For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’
Question: Just as a reminder what is the commandment (v.10)?
Mark 7:12 NASB95
12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;
It is implied the selfishness of the adult children, He is pointing out they are putting aside the commandment of God for the traditions of man. We are to support our parents, take care of our parents.
It was taught by Paul (1Tim5:3-8, 16)
1 Timothy 5:3–4 NASB95
3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
Question: What is to be done for own family according to (v.4)?
Make some return to their parents, for it is acceptable in the sight of God
Now I need to keep things in context because I want to get to another verse and if I just jump you may wonder why.
1 Timothy 5:5–6 NASB95
5 Now she who is a widow indeed and who has been left alone, has fixed her hope on God and continues in entreaties and prayers night and day. 6 But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives.
1 Timothy 5:7–8 NASB95
7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Question: What is the results if you do not provide for his own (v.8)?
He has denied the faith, and it worse than an unbeliever.
Remember Jesus said that even the evil know how to give good to the children, so would that not work in reverse too?
(Transition) I know there is a lot to take in, and we have now looked at the Christian home in many specific ways, there is more to come in the weeks to follow, but to sum things up for now.
Blessed is the home who have a Christian marriage that is defined by the scripture and joyfully fulfilled by both husband and wife.
Blessed is the home in which Christian parents raise up the children in the ways of the Lord and the children and parents both fulfill their roles joyfully.
