Deuteronomy 6:4-9
You have One Job
Intro;
Read the verses
Main Point. You have one job in your Christian life, Love God with all your heart, mind and soul.
God Will Sustain You
This command is to ensure you have undivided loyalty to the Lord.
He is the one that has called you and he is the one sustaining you through everything.
God is the one and Only. When you love in this way God, a person is able to love others and I have found that he gives me strength to prepare to preach and minister to those you have been called to shepherd even if you do not feel like it.
You die to yourself and you allow God to lead you.
Being a Christian is not easy and being a leader and responsible is even more challenging. Paul says “Let those who aspire to be an elder or overseer, he desires a noble work.”
God Will Strengthen You
When Moses tells the Israelites to hear he also says in verse 6 Take to heart these instructions. So you must take the words to heart before you can communicate them to others.
We teach and preach to others because we love them. We should want others to experience the same joy and excitement we do, or that we should when we learn and teach about the Triune God and our savior.
In 1Timothy 5:17 Paul says The elders who are good leaders are to be considered worthy of double honor especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
But James 3:1 warns that Not many should become teachers my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgement.
You are a messenger of the King. You carry His word to others to tell and spread the Good News.
God Will Satisfy You
When you know you have performed your job you can rest easy. I’m not sure if you have experienced it or not and if anyone is aware of it, but the pastors probably have experienced it and I had someone else online ask, Does anyone else get really tired after preaching?
The need for a nap is very real. When you do a good job you know it and you can rest easy.
We can be satisfied because we know that it is not these words or the law that satisfies us, but God’s Word, His Logos, Jesus Christ that is our true rest and satisfaction.
God is the one we are to preach about and there will be hard sayings and difficult times in your ministry, that you have to deal with. God will make you deal those hard words yourself before you can tell them or teach them to others. It is worth it. God is changing you, remaking you in His image as much as he is utilizing you to do the same to other people.
The chisel must remain sharp and clean in order to effectively carve the wood into the woodcarver’s intended item whether that is a table, a chair, or a bowl.
So with that I will ask Akiya to come forward and sit in the chair and I will now provide the charge to the office we are about to install you.
An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), 6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. 7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Charge:
MINISTER: Do you promise to walk worthily of the vocation to which you are called, seeking always to bring honor to the name of Jesus Christ as your Lord; and do you promise diligently and faithfully to perform the duties of a minister of the gospel with no thought of personal reward or honor, having as your primary motives, the winning of persons to Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and the building up of the church of Christ through inspiration, teaching, exhortation, and stewardship, to the glory of God? Do you so promise?
Candidate Response: I Do.
In the words of William Perkins: Thou art a Minister of the Word: Mind thy Business
