Matthew 6:9 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
May we treat your name as holy
He is our father and yet holy
I do not fully understand his holiness
Isaiah 6:3 NKJV
3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
He is so far above and beyond that he is almost completely foreign to us
God is holy, transcendent, unlike us, separate,
The significance of 3 holy
God is a cut above us: Transcendent
Sin us mundane and boring, not shocking, because we see and do it every day
God doesn’t
Isaiah 6:5 NKJV
5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”
He was believed to be wholesome, had his life together, a picture of righteousness but in a moment he was naked and exposed
God is holy, transcendent, unlike us, separate,
Mark 4:41 ESV
41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Luke 5:8 NET
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
Uzzah, John, Ezekiel… we could go on
when we meet and infinitely perfect God we realize that we are not, we are exposed as fragile and sinful
Romans 3:23 NET
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
MAY WE TREAT HIS NAME AS HOLY: How can unholy people do this? we can’t, unless God makes us holy
Bowl in the holy of holies
2. God must make you holy: Set Apart
He sets you apart through Jesus
Hebrews 10:10 NET
10 By his will we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
The problem is we may claim his name but don’t live it
Profane: worthless
Ezekiel 36:20–21 RSV
20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that men said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel caused to be profaned among the nations to which they came.
We are asking God to participate in treating his name holy
That means every part of our life is holy, set apart to, him
our marriage is his,
our kids are his,
our money is his,
our job is his,
dating,
future decisions,
future career,
is all set apart to treat his name holy
you cannot continue in your sin and claim that you are his, you cannot serve two masters
May we treat your name as holy
