The thirsty soul

John 7:37–39 KJV 1900
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
We shed tears
in sorrow
in pain
in loss
in joy
When was there a time when shed tears
for the lost?
for the broken?
for the marginalized?
Jeremiah 8:20–22 KJV 1900
20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. 21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. 22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
It is difficult to bring healing
When we become indifferent to the pain
When we can no longer hurt with the hurting
When we become callous or cynical
Is there no balm
no help
no aid
no compassion
no love

When will we care enough to care?

John 7:37 KJV 1900
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Jesus at the highest point of their celebration found something to cry about

His cry was
not about physical discomfort
Not about pain or brokenness
Not about a loss
For the thirsty
John 6:35 KJV 1900
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

It was a reason for tears

Matthew 9:36 KJV 1900
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Jesus’ passion was for the lost
He saw them
He was moved moved with compassion
Compassion in the old testament
to surround
to have sympathy for
to envolved oneself
to show love or mercy
Compassion in the new testament
To be around
to sympathies with
to have pity
Jesus’s greatest concern
reflected God’s concern
was the condition of others
Jesus cries
for the thirsty
Matthew 5:6 KJV 1900
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Jesus cries
For the thirsty
For those willing to come
Matthew 11:28 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Jesus cries
For the thirsty
For those willing to come
For those who will drink
John 7:37 KJV 1900
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
Jesus make a promise
If we thirst
If we come
If we drink

We will never thirst again

Jeremiah 2:13 KJV 1900
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Jesus is the thirst quencher
John 7:38 KJV 1900
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
John 4:5–7 KJV 1900
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Jesus is on a journey from Judah to Galilee
Judah was a hard place
The center of religious activity
The temple was there
Jesus was being so effective
He became the talk of the town
John 4:1–2 KJV 1900
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
John 4:3–4 KJV 1900
3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
On the way he had a must need moment
Somebody is thirsty
Somebody needed some water
Somebody needed a drink
The text says that Jesus initiated the conversation
Asked give me to drink
Jesus was weary
Was hot
Was fully hydrated
John 4:10 KJV 1900
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
All she need is to know
The gift of God
Who Jesus is

Because she didn’t know she didn’t ask.

She could only raise walls
Racism
Religion
Differences
Denomination

Jesus did not let these keep him from seeing the thirsty

She finally asked
Who are you
Are you greater than Jacob (He gave us this well)
John 4:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

She said to him give me this water

She wanted what He had
She was thirsty
She came to him
She drank the water
She received what he had
John 1:11–12 KJV 1900
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
She wanted what He had
She was thirsty
She came to him
She drank the water
She received what he had
She was satisfied
John 4:28–29 KJV 1900
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
The woman came
Came to the well
Came with an empty water pot
Came to get water from the well
She went back
Without her pot
Without any water

She didn’t go back empty

She got something
The pot could not contain
Her hands could not handle
something happened and now I know ....
something on the inside working on the outside...

She had drank from a well that never runs dry.

Now she could testify
This encounter exposed some things
Her sin
Her embarrassing moments
Her choices
This encounter reveal some things
God’s compassion
God’s purpose
God’s love
John 4:28–30 KJV 1900
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
2 Corinthians 5:17–19 KJV 1900
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
John 4:41–42 KJV 1900
41 And many more believed because of his own word; 42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

Jesus still cares for us

His invitation still stands
We don’t need
to seek a well
to find water
Are thirsty
Come to Jesus
Are you dry, weary
Come to Jesus
Is your soul not satisfied
Come to Jesus
John 7:37–39 KJV 1900
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
