The Love of Money
INTRODUCTION:
There is no sin in having money.
However, loving money more than God or others is wrong. Our attitude and use of money makes the difference.
SOME LIVE FOR MONEY
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
Some live for money, hoarding, hiding, and worshipping wealth.
Countless numbers sacrifice friends, family, and spiritual health for money.
The love of money distorts their values
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The more miserly people become, the less happy they are.
SOME LUST AFTER MONEY
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Some set their affections on money.
Their purpose in life is to get rich at any cost
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,
When the glory of his house is increased;
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away:
His glory shall not descend after him.
Many people lie, cheat, steal, and kill for money.
It is the "root of all evil.” Through his subtlety, Satan tempts Christians to become more and more desirous of money.
SOME LOSE THROUGH MONEY
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The great depression of the 30’s brought devastation. Many lost their life savings.
Multitudes of people have lost their homes, health, and honor because they trusted in uncertain riches instead of the living God.
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
A lost soul is the saddest loss of all.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
GOD PROSPECTIVE OF MONEY
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
The rich person is to lay up wealth for the world to come. How does a rich person do this?
Þ By distributing and giving generously and sacrificially (1 Tim. 6:18).
Þ By using "their wealth to do good [and being]...ready to share...[remembering] that a Christian is essentially a man who is a member of a fellowship."
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
ILLUSTRATION:
Why does God allow certain Christian believers to become rich? It is never for their own gain; it is always for the gain of His Kingdom. Here is an example of a man who freely opened his hand and channeled God's resources to do God's work.
Mr. Wilson was quite a successful businessman. He was in the orange juice business and was on the cutting edge of production, shipping and marketing of his product. In fact, he was so successful, that he became one of the dominant players in the juice industry. From humble beginnings, he became a very rich man. Mr. Wilson was never one to count his money except for the sole purpose of giving money to the work of God. He tithed and gave huge sums to help meet the ministry and building needs of his church. In addition, he was led by the Lord to become involved in financing a particular Bible college. He helped the college build its buildings, but he also did something that every student at the Bible college appreciated. His company provided free orange juice for breakfast. When Mr. Wilson visited the campus, he had breakfast in the cafeteria that he had provided, had a glass of juice that he had paid for, sat with a student body that he had provided with scholarships; but he was never recognized by anyone. But for Mr. Wilson, that was acceptable. Recognition was not the reason he gave. He gave because his heart had been gripped by God out of thanksgiving for God's saving him. And because God saved him, Mr. Wilson invested in the lives of people, people who would take the gospel, the good news, to the nations of the earth.
No matter how much or how little you have, are you using God's blessings to further God's Kingdom or your own?
