Introduction
Greetings…
We will be continuing our theme “God By Name” wherein we are examining the different names for God found throughout the Old Testament.
Last week we examined Yahweh-Sabaoth or LORD of Hosts which describes God as the “highest God” and “commander and chief.”
Today we will focus our attention on the name of God found in Judges 6:24. Before we read that passage, I want us to understand the context of it.
Deborah’s judging of Israel lasted 40 years (1209-1169) and then we find that for the next seven years the Israelites “did what was evil in the sight of the LORD” again (Judges 6:1).
This led God to allow the Midianites to overpower Israel and cause them to flee to the mountains and live.
Whenever the Israelites planted crops the Midianites, Amalekies, and the people of the East would come and destroy the produce leaving no food, sheep, ox or donkeys.
It’s after these seven years we find “the angel of the LORD” coming and visiting Gideon who was beating the wheat he harvested in a winepress to hide if from the Midianites. As we studied earlier “the angel of the LORD” is Jesus (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58).
Gideon unsure this messenger was God asked for a sign since, as he questioned Jesus, “where are all the wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us.”
So God allowed him Gideon to prepare a “present” (ESV), offering (NKJV)” which was a non-blood offering for worship.
The angel of the LORD stayed and consumed the gift with fire proving to Gideon he was God...
This all led Gideon to make an altar and call it “Yahweh-Shalom” or “LORD Is Peace.”
24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.
How does knowing all this help us today?
The reality is we live in a time of much like Gideon’s, because like him we live in a time of…
Certain Chaos
Certain Chaos
Acrimonious
Acrimonious
The word “acrimonious” means caustic…or rancorous especially in feeling, language, or manner.”
This old sinful world we live in is full of acrimonious people to say the least and that is exactly how Satan wants it.
The more chaotic this world can become the more victorious Satan is as he pulls the strings of the compliant and/or ignorant, living in sin.
Satan has striven for and succeeded in making many in America think the biblical home is a farce.
Whether it be the LGBTQ+ community, BLM Organization, Democratic party, or many others they have all striven and, in many ways, succeed in making the biblical home of a father, mother, and children sound “wrong” in the eyes of over half of our country.
Satan has striven for and succeed in making many in America think social moral issues are irrelevant or old fashion.
Social drinking, gambling, tobacco use, fornication, and the like are not only not condemned but championed by so many including many in the church.
Satan has striven for and succeeded in making many in America think religion of any kind is not only ignorant but dangerous.
We have all seen the videos of the rioting in Portland, Oregon. There is even a video of them not just burning the American flag but large number of bibles as well.
Summary
Summary
Satan the “puppet master” of sin has made this old sinful world acrimonious to say the least.
16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Yes, people have sustained sin in the world bring certain chaos with it wherever it may be and yes while living in sin chaos is the only option, however there is another way as you all here know today.
That other way is the “only way” and God’s way is the way of…
Perpetual Peace
Perpetual Peace
Serenity
Serenity
The word serenity basically means, “utter calm.”
As we just discussed the world brings with it utter chaos. Up is down, left is right, right is wrong, etc.…
20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Thankfully the God whom you and I are here to serve and worship today is not the “God of confusion” but rather serenity i.e. peace.
33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
In fact over and over in the Bible he is literally called and rightfully so the…
God Of Peace
God Of Peace
The Hebrew word for peace here in Judges 6:24 is the word “salom” and means, “the state of being safe or free from danger.”
Isreal had been under the Midianites oppression for seven years and when the angel of the LORD along with Gideon and his army of 300 defeated the Midianites “safety or peace” once again reined in Israel.
The God of Peace wants his creation to live in the “peace that surpasses understanding.”
That’s why our God of peace sent Jesus to this earth.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
That’s why our God of peace gave us the gospel message that calls us to peace.
36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),
15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace.
That’s why our God of peace created a new law by abolishing other two making it possible for all mankind to have peace.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.
Summary
Summary
This perpetual peace, that can only come from God and can only be found in Christ, will guard our hearts and minds against the certain chaos of this sinful world, this chaotic world we live in.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Yes, this world, because of sin, offers certain chaos which leads people to feeling insecure and fearful all the time.
Satan wants that for everyone’s lives, but God doesn’t, and he offers the only true peace that we can have this earth.
Only God offers complete security and perfect joy through his “perpetual peace.”
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
