Hunger and Thirst

Matthew 5:6 NKJV
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Let’s focus on 3 words Hunger, Thirst and Righteousness
First lets talk about hunger:
To be hungry and thirsty demonstrate a fundamental human need. The need for sustenance.
We are dealing with another dimension of human need. The focus is on the need and what it feels like to be hungry and thirsty. We can understand that physically but this time Jesus is talking about a hunger and thirst for righteousness.
By definition to hunger means:
To be hungry famished starved. To lack food needed for life and sustenance.
A Person can go without eating for over 70 days
Hunger produces negative affects in our bodies
Hunger can lead to starvation which leads to organ failure and then death
Starvation comes with many warnings eat be filled eat be filled
Very few people die of starvation because the usually die of an immune disease first!
Apathy
Withdrawal
Increased susceptibility of disease
Living life without properly eating/ feasting will cause you many problems in your spiritual walk with God
In this case the word Hunger implies an action or a choice, an active desire that is capable of action. Its a chosen appetite like if I don’t do this I will die…
Jesus said:
John 6:35 NKJV
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
Jesus is the Bread of Life
If we come to Him we shall never hunger
Now lets talk about Thirst!
To thirst means:
A feeling of needing or wanting to drink, or the lack of the liquid needed to sustain life.
3 to 8 days without water will kill you.
again living life lacking water will lead to many problems in your spiritual life
Jesus said:
John 7:37–38 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
Jesus quenches our thirst
If we come to Him
If we believe rivers of living water will flow from us!
Let’s talk about Righteousness
Definition of Righteousness:
Quality of being upright, just, righteous. To do what is right.
Is all we really need or want is to be right or is it to become one with the one and only one who is righteous?
Is this what our soul desires and long for. Is it the desire that we can be joined to Christ and become one in Him?
Romans 6:13 NKJV
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
1 John 2:29 NKJV
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
Titus 2:12 NKJV
teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
2 Timothy 2:22 NKJV
Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Romans 8:4–6 NKJV
that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

They Shall Be Filled

Ephesians 5:18 NKJV
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Acts 2:4 NKJV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
