John 16:16–22 NLT
“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.” Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’? And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.” Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again. I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.
I. Temporary Interruption.
A. “In a little while you won’t see me anymore.
B. But a little while after that, you will see me again.
II. Suffering A Painful Reality.
A. You will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me.
There is a distinction between weeping and crying. To cry means to shed tears silently but to weep means to bewail and pour your heart out in a loud manner.
Why were they going to weep? Because of how they were going to do Jesus, because of what He was going to suffer, because that He was going to die.
It is a painful experience to watch someone you love and care for to suffer!
B. The world will rejoice.
While they suffered, while they wailed and weeped, the world was going to rejoice.
This may not be like our situation, but there will be some people in your life that won’t care about the pain and the agony that you are going through when you suffer a loss. I may be crying and weeping now, but it’s going to be okay. Why is it going to be okay?
III. Transference of Pain to Joy.
A. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.
God is going to turn that grief, He’s going to turn that pain into wonderful joy.
No wonder the song writer said “Weeping may endure for night, but joy cometh in the morning.” We gotta go through darkness right now, we may have to experience some suffering right now, it may hurt right now, we may not be able to understand it or see clearly right now......BUT GOD SAID JOY WILL COME IN THE MORNING TIME!!!! Just hang on until the morning.....it’s dark right now but hold on......the SON IS GOING TO RISE!!
Malachi 4:2 AV
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
B. You experience will be like a woman suffering pains of labor.
The suffering is going to be intense. I can imagine that back in Jesus’ time there wasn’t a whole lot they could do for a woman who was giving birth to a child. They didn’t have needles they could inject in your spine to numb and take the edge off the pain.
There are things that can happen in life that the pain can become extraordinary and I’m not just referring to physical pain. Mental pain, emotional pain, spiritual pain, and when those things happen sometimes people look and turn to substances to numb their pain. But for a saint of God that isn’t an option for us. We can’t turn to the Hennesey, we can’t turn to the weed, the heroin, meth, or flakka. When we hurt, when we are in trouble we turn to Jesus! It may hurt, but lay your hurt at the foot of Jesus!
It seems like when you are hurting, it feels like it is never going to end, but I assure that what you are feeling, what you are experiencing is only temporary.
What the disciples were going to experience, the pain and agony, even the pain and agony that Jesus himself experienced was going t be temporary.
C. You are going to hurt, but that pain/anguish will give way to joy.
The pain that the disciples were going to experience was going to be turned into JOY! When that baby hits the mothers arms, that pain is turned into joy! Mom experienced some pain......but I’ve come to tell you this morning and to serve the devil notice that he didn’t win.....because Mom’s pain has been turned into JOY and I’ve come to let you know and to serve the devil another notice....that we might be hurting right now, we might be going thru right now, but because Jesus secured victory for us through his death, resurrection, and ascension that no matter what we are faced with in life, the believers pain will be turned into JOY!
IV. This Joy I Have.
A. I will see you again!
Jesus assured the disciples, his friends, his family.....I will see you again!
They say that when you die, your hearing is the last thing to go, when Momma passed, I kissed her on the fore-head and told her that “I’ll See You After Awhile”. Why did I say that? Because Jesus said I’m going to die, but then you’ll see me again and this is the faith that we have in Jesus Christ, that because we believe that He died and rose again from the grave Paul says in Romans 8:11
Romans 8:11 AV
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Let’s see, let’s go down the check list:
1. I heard and believed the gospel.
2. I believed in my heart and confessed Him with my mouth.
3. I repented of my sins
4. I was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
5. I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
So now Paul, your telling me that if I have the Holy Ghost, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwelling in me, that God is going to bring my dead body back to life!? Absolutely!!!
No wonder, the disciples had joy, no wonder we can have joy in the midst of our pain!
B. When I see you, when you see me, you will rejoice.
When they saw Jesus alive after He suffered the horrible tradgic death and I can imagine they said.....man if Jesus got up from that.....WHAT IS THAT JESUS CAN DO FOR US!?
C. No one can rob you of that joy.
When the LORD gives you joy the world can take from you, the devil can’t take it from, the demons of Hell can’t take it from you!
It might hurt right now, it might be difficult right now, it might seems as if darkness is enveloped all around, but the morning is fast approaching and the Son is going to rise giving light to a new day.
Psalms 18:28
Psalm 18:28 AV
For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
The Lord is going to light up my darkness! I think about my Momma, here in a couple of days we will lay her to rest, they gonna put her in the ground. But it’s all good, you know why? Because even though she may be in the earth....one day THE LORD is going to light up her darkness!
