Walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16 NIV
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Desires of the Flesh
discuss this last week
we learn to deal with our selfish desires - spiritual maturity
we learn how to forgive personal hurts
we refuse to be influenced by others
we resist the demands of the demonic forces of this world
Walk by the Spirit
the Spirit creates a new man - we renew our minds, we do the things of Christ
the Spirit gives us grace and mercy to supernaturally rise above
the Spirit teaches us and leads us into all truth
the Spirit allows us to submit to God and then resist the devil
The Spirit
so the Spirit is an essential component of our new life in Jesus Christ
the Spirit turned a few scared fishermen and tax collectors into fearless witnesses of the risen Lord
the Spirit took a few and changed the whole world
for the first time God gave man a way out of his corrupted and fallen state
it was the Spirit that convicts us and then renews us to be children of God
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
the Spirit was not universally given to men
there was a fair amount of the Spirit coming upon individuals e.g. Saul
1 Samuel 10:10 NIV
When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.
there was an understanding that the Spirit could withdraw e.g. David
Psalm 51:11 NIV
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
there was a prophetic promise of the Holy Spirit
Ezekiel 36:25–27 NIV
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
The Promise of God
I will cleanse you from all sin
I will give you a new heart - the new man
I will put a new spirit in you - the old corrupted spirit gone!
I will put my Spirit in you
The Promise of Jesus
Acts 1:5 NIV
For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
very last words of Jesus recorded in Acts 1
John baptized with water for the forgiveness of sin
yet jesus is saying that there is another, a batism of the Holy Spirit
the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit
the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not about forgiveness but power
Acts 1:8 NIV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
power to be disciples of Christ
we will discuss the se matters in the coming weeks
power to be witnesses to the ends of the world
The Coming of the Spirit
Acts 2:4 NIV
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
all of them were filled
this was more than the Old Testament pattern of the Spirit falling just upon prophets
this was more than the random and occasional visit
this was more than the fruitless and repetitive exertion of trying unsuccessfully to obey the law
this was the start of God’s redemptive and restorative work upon all of mankind
there was an extraordinary manifestation - speaking in other tongues
this continues to happen today when the baptism of the Holy Spirit happens to someone
Acts 2:17–21 NIV
“ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Peter quickly declares the universal pouring out of the Spirit
all men and women now has access to the Spirit and his power
prophesy, dreams, signs and wonders are the hallmarks of this new era
everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
The Holy Spirit
1. convicts a person of their sin
2. renews that person with a new heart and a new spirit
3. empowers that person to do the work of Jesus
Holy Spirit baptism is very much a surrender by you to the Holy Spirit
being saved does not necessarily mean that you give control over to God
without doubt you must consciously and deliberately give control of your mind and spirit to the Holy Spirit
it has be an act of your free will - God does not demand nor force you to do so
Romans 8:5 NIV
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
next week we will go into Romans 8 to discover how the Spirit allows you to be fully free and fully alive in serving Jesus
