Romans 1:16 NKJV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
Paul writes I am not ashamed of the gospel...
The long held traditional definition of the gospel is the good news.
Why the good news?
Because it is hope to all that hear it.
Look at
Luke 4:18–20 NKJV
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.
Jesus says I've been appointed to preach a message of hope to all those who are in need of it.
Where does this message of hope come from? Well I'm
Glad you ask.
The book!!!
So my title today is....
The the book, again!
Notice Colossians
Colossians 1:3–6 NKJV
3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;
because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard (of this HOPE) before in the word of the truth of the gospel.
The gospel message is one of hope.
Roy Petterson wrote in his article "the forbidden bible"
One insidious type of persecution against Christians is the denial of access to the Bible. For followers of Christ, the Bible is a source of hope and encouragement. Yet in too many places in the world, this life-changing book is forbidden."
There are believe to be at least 50 countries in the world that there is either restriction on or even band the bible. Why?
Because in the gospel there is found God truth.
Colossians 1:6 NKJV
6 which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;
Now what's the scriptures say about truth?
You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Or set you free
That why Paul says next
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation
The power of God
It's God's power because it's Gods word and God's word has power.
Power to make you free
Peter and Paul both experience this power while they were in jail
Peter in jail and the church prayed for him
Paul and Silas in jail and the begin to raise a praise
My 3 Hebrew boys where saved from the fire
Daniel experience the power when he was thrown in the lions den.
And today the gospel still has power to save.
I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God to salvation
A couple weeks ago I talked about how we don't got to go to hell but it's much more than that.
That is where many of us Christian stop. We come to Christ
so we can escape hell. But Christ came to do more.
John 10:10 NKJV
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
So salvation is not just for when you die but so that you will live.
Remember the word for salvation is soteria... Which comes from the word sozo meaning saved.
Look at
Matthew 1:21 NASB95
21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save (sozo) His people from their sins.
From their sins.
The gospel gives power to make us free from the control of sin.
Acts 27:34 NASB95
34 “Therefore I encourage you to take some food, for this is for your preservation, for not a hair from the head of any of you will perish.”
Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your
health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any
of you.
The word for health is the word Soteria.
The gospel is the power of God to save us out of is sickness.
3 John 2 NASB95
2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper
and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Jesus came death on the cross was not just for our eternal
security but for our entire walk with him.
Isaiah 53:4–5 NASB95
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Malachi 4:2 NASB95
2 “But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness
arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up
as calves of the stall.
This is Malachi ending the old testament prophesying about
our Christ that will be healing in his wings.
Why do you think that the woman with the issue of blood
went for the hem of his garment?
Because she knew if she touched him she would be healed.
When she touch the hem of his garment she was SOZO-ed
And Jesus said he felt power depart from him
My last point is we are saved out of is our enemies.
Luke 1:71 NASB95
71 Salvation from our enemies, And from the hand of all who hate us;
Salvation from those who hate us.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes,
So then now the emphasis is placed on our faith.
Jesus tells Mary and Martha
If you just believe, you would see the glory of God.
1 John 5:4 NASB95
4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
The gospel gives us hope to believe this truth.
