Happy birthday to Tenten Miranda
It’s TUESDAY the 11th of August
Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the gospel of John
Yesterday right here at “The Message” we completed Chapter 18 with the narrative of events when Jesus was brought by Caiaphas, along with the Jewish Leaders, to Pontius Pilate
From the conversation that ensued between our Lord Jesus and Pilate, we learned:
JESUS CAME TO THIS WORLD TO TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH
I AM ON THE SIDE OF TRUTH AND I LISTEN TO JESUS
Let’s see what happened afterwards when Jesus was sentenced to be crucified— Open your Bible JOHN 19:1-16, once you got there, type “I’m on it!”
SIN TO CONFESS, PROMISES TO CLAIM, ATTITUDE TO CHANGE, COMMANDS TO KEEP, EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW, PRAYERS TO PRAY, ERRORS TO AVOID, TRUTH TO BELIEVE, SOMETHING TO THANK GOD FOR
Read JOHN 19:1-16

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face. 4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” 6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.” 7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.” 13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered. 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

SLAPPED HIM IN THE FACE
These acts of mockery and punishment may allude to ISAIAH 50:6 [742-701 BC]
I FIND NO BASIS FOR A CHARGE AGAINST HIM
For the nth time, Pilate insisted— I find no basis for a charge against him— does Pilate recognized Jesus as the Son of God? or simply, there’s none in their Roman law that will justify the Lord’s crucifixion?
Pontius Pilate again made a public statement that he did not find any evidence to charge him of anything worthy of crucifixion
I believe that Pilate did this to prevent people from uprising— though it was the high priest and the Jewish leaders are the ones making the most noice— followers of Jesus was quiet— listen!
THEY SHOUTED CRUCIFY! CRUCIFY!
But again Pilate said, “you take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
But the Jewish leaders insisted...
WE HAVE A LAW, AND ACCORDING TO THAT LAW HE MUST DIE
Why does he have to die?— because he claimed to be the Son of God
Which law in the Bible are they referring to?— LEVITICUS 24:16
WHEN PILATE HEARD THIS, HE WAS EVEN MORE AFRAID
Pilate was afraid of the possible uprising of the people— and at the same time, he is worried what if indeed, Jesus is the Son of God?
So he want back inside the Governor’s palace again and continued to ask Jesus— where do you come from?
BUT JESUS GAVE HIM NO ANSWER
There are times when it is better to remain quiet
YOU WOULD HAVE NO POWER OVER ME IF IT WERE NOT GIVEN TO YOU FROM ABOVE
Jesus claimed that all authority comes from God— God caused all things to happen
FROM THEN ON, PILATE TRIED TO SET JESUS FREE
But the Jewish leaders kept shouting— they’ve threatened Pilate, if you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar
What is really intriguing here for me is— where are the followers of Jesus? why are they so quiet?
As final way for Pilate to clear himself of the Lord’s blood— he asked again, “here is your king, shall I crucify him?”
WE HAVE NO KING BUT CAESAR, THE CHIEF PRIEST ANSWERED
So, Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified
