Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the gospel of John
Yesterday right here at “The Message” we gone through the events that took place during the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus— from that incident, because of the cross he carried, we are reminded of what the Lord taught his disciples [that includes us] about the cost of being his disciples
And from that teaching of our Lord found in LUKE 14:25-27— we learned:
MY DEVOTION TO JESUS IS MY PRIORITY OVER ANYONE ELSE
I WILL CARRY MY CROSS AS I FOLLOW JESUS
Ok, so Jesus was already crucified at this point— let’s see what happened while He was on that cross— Open your Bible to JOHN 19:28-37— and once you got there, type “I found it!”
SIN TO CONFESS, PROMISES TO CLAIM, ATTITUDE TO CHANGE, COMMANDS TO KEEP, EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW, PRAYERS TO PRAY, ERRORS TO AVOID, TRUTH TO BELIEVE, SOMETHING TO THANK GOD FOR
Read JOHN 19:28-37

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
WHAT: Death of the Lord Jesus
WHEN: Day of preparation [before Sabbath | Shabbath in Hebrew]—meaning to rest from work. God gave people the sabbath as opportunity to serve Him.
In Jesus time, this observed from Friday evening until Saturday evening]— their basis for this dates back all the way back to GENESIS 2:3
Which day of the week is the first day?— Sunday!
WHERE: Place of Skull [Golgotha in Aramaic]
WHO: Jesus, two other criminal, soldiers, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary’s sister, Mary wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene, John the Beloved and some crowd
WHY: To complete what Jesus came here on earth for
HOW: We just read how it happened, but let’s take a closer look to see what we can lessons we can live out from the narrative
From this— at least 3 prophecies about our Lord was fulfilled— let’s take a look

JESUS SAID, “I AM THIRSTY.”
A jar of wine vinegar [cheap wine] to help them endure the pain— they soaked a sponge, put it on a stalk of a hyssop plant and lifted up to the Lord’s lips— PSALM 69:21
JESUS SAID, “IT IS FINISHED.”
After saying that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit
Jesus knows that God’s plan for Him has reached its completion— he has done what He came here for— JOHN 17:4-5
THEY DID NOT BREAK HIS LEGS. INSTEAD, ONE OF THE SOLDIERS PIERCED JESUS SIDE WITH SPEAR
Crucifixion was an intentionally long and painful death.
When people were crucified, their feet and hands would be nailed to the cross.
With the rib cage and lungs stretched out, people would need put weight on their legs to lift themselves up and make it easier to breathe.
If someone stayed alive for what was deemed to long on a cross, executioners would break their legs
But in the case of our Lord, they did not break his legs— and that fulfilled another prophecy
It was commanded in the Old Testament that bones of passover lambs shall not be broken. Jesus was passover lamb [sacrifice for our sins]— EXODUS 12:46
Instead, they pierced Jesus on his side. Another prophecy fulfilled— ZECHARIAH 12:10
BRINGING A SUDDEN FLOW OF BLOOD AND WATER
This showed that Jesus was 100% human— the Word became flesh
Let me go back to what Jesus said “It is finished!”, and see what he meant and what we shall learn from it— JOHN 19:30
From this is a very important truth on our doctrine of salvation
