Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the gospel of John
Yesterday right here at “The Message” we had a deeper look on what happened when Jesus was sentenced to be crucified— and from that we learned that..
THERE ARE TIMES THAT I NEED TO REMAIN SILENT
So then, what happened after Jesus was sentenced to be crucified?— Let’s see! Open your Bible to JOHN 19:17-27. Once you got there, type “I got it!”
SIN TO CONFESS, PROMISES TO CLAIM, ATTITUDE TO CHANGE, COMMANDS TO KEEP, EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW, PRAYERS TO PRAY, ERRORS TO AVOID, TRUTH TO BELIEVE, SOMETHING TO THANK GOD FOR
Read JOHN 19:17-27
John 19:17–27 NIV
17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did. 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
WHAT: The Crucifixion of Jesus
WHEN: The day He died— If he resurrected on a Sunday, then this was on Friday. Remember, during that generation they count “sunrises or days”. If our modern day hotel count night, they counted mornings. 1st hour represents sunrise. Jesus died on the 9th hour and that’s equivalent to 3pm in our modern time reading.
WHERE: Place of the Skull— Golgotha in Aramaic [near the city of Jerusalem]
WHO: Jesus, 2 other crucified criminals, Pontius Pilate, Chief Priest, Soldiers, Mary [Mother], His Mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene and John the Beloved.
WHY: To carry out the sentence on Jesus to be crucified. To fulfill the prophecies about our Lord.
HOW: We saw how it happened as recorded in the Gospel of John. This incident is also recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke

LOOK

CARRYING HIS OWN CROSS
Jesus was made to carry His own cross— Previously, the Lord said something about carrying your cross. Let’s revisit it— LUKE 14:25-27
THEY TOOK HIS CLOTHES, DIVIDING INTO FOUR SHARES
This is another prophecy about Jesus fulfilled— PSALM 22:18
NEAR THE CROSS OF JESUS STOOD
His mother— Mary— likely from the tribe of Levi. Cousin of Elizabeth
His mother’s sister
Mary the wife of Clopas— Nothing is known of this Mary outside of this passage. And so with Clopas.
Mary Magdalene— The woman exorcised by Jesus. Seven demons was cast out of her— LUKE 8:2— Her name was very likely derived from the name of the place she was from— Magdala [North of the city of Tiberias— Western shore of the sea of Galilee]
Disciple whom He loved— John the Beloved. The author of this Gospel and the Book of Revelation, and the son of Zebedee.
WOMAN, HERE IS YOUR SON
And to John He said, “here is your mother”— Mary apparently was depending on Him and his disciples. Joseph might have died by this time.
Interestingly, our Lord did not call her “mother”
Let’s revisit LUKE 14:25-27— Our application for today will come from here..
