Right Hook

What about our the way we present our lives to God? This was an issue that Israel was dealing with through their disobedience to God when they were building their golden calf.

Explanation

Context : Moses has just finished dealing with the people pf Israel and he is going back to God to seek atonement for the people. At this point God has told Moses to take the people to the land he has promised them, but God will not go with them for their disobedience has made him angry.
Moses has met with God in the tent of meeting that is outside the camp. In verse 11 scripture says that Moses and God met face-to-face. However this is a literary mechanism to describe the depth of their relationship they share with each other and not the literal meaning it implies.
Exodus 33:12–23 NLT
One day Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” The Lord replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” The Lord continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock. As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.”
Moses’ Confession
God we are nothing without you
-I am a leader who doesn’t know where to go
-These people are a chosen people without the one who chose them.
I don’t want to go anywhere without you so wherever you are I want to be even if that means not experiencing the promise land.
-Being there would mean nothing without you
-We would not survive without you
-Please don’t send us if you aren’t going with us
“Then Show me Your glorious presence”
-bossy of Moses?
-What was his intention with this request?
-Moses wanted a deeper understanding of who God was and a deeper experience of the covenant they had together.
I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious is again an echo and even a functional equivalent to I AM WHO I AM.
Moses wanted to know God in a deeper way no matter the consequences.

instead of confronting God, Moses must stand in a sheltered place and be covered by Yahweh’s “hand” until the glory has passed. Then he may look at Yahweh’s “back.” As the “holy danger” recedes, Moses can glimpse “all those qualities which call forth worship and praise” (G. B. Caird, The Language and Imagery of the Bible, 76).

Matthew 6:19–21 NLT
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Application

The way we think about our Identity is how we present ourselves to the world.
Our Identity is not about how we present, but who is present.
If you have entered into a covenant relationship with Jesus
-Allowing him to lead your life and you follow his lead
-listen for his voice and learn from him
-Relationship
-Not a one time decision that hasn’t been thought about much since
-ongoing covenant relationship
God’s Holy Spirit is in you and it is that Spirit who shapes our lives....It is our identity that flows from that desire for more of God
Romans 6:8–11 NLT
And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
We started 2 weeks ago looking at Identity
Identity is created by God, enabling us to combat sin and show his ways to the world
Identity is God’s Mercy-ful response to us and our Mercy-ful response to others
Identity is in God’s Presence
