Dictionary of Bible Themes 8248 faithfulness

faithfulness

Commitment to a relationship with God or fellow human beings; seen in that loyalty, devotion and service which is a reflection of God’s own faithfulness. Scripture points to the faithfulness of Jesus Christ as an example for believers.

Faithfulness

When Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, there were many people buried in the ruins. Some were found in cellars, as if they had gone there for security. Some were found in the upper rooms of buildings. But where was the Roman sentinel found? Standing at the city gate where he had been placed by the captain, with his hands still grasping his weapon. There, while the earth shook beneath him—there, while the floods of ashes and cinders covered him—he had stood at his post. And there, after a thousand years, was this faithful man still to be found.482

Unnecessary Call outs
People say one thing but do something else
When you have the sporting world, the business world and the political world and everybody else are being shaken....Can we remain faithful to God? Jesus can come right now......will you remain faithful to Jesus?
1. The Request for the Faithful (Psalm 81:8)
Ps 50:7 — "Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you; I am God, your God. would listen to
Ps 95:7For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you would hear His voice,
God states a request, which is practically a command, for the people which must be fulfilled if they would be faithful to God.

The words “I said” are supplied in the translation for clarification. Verses 8–10 appear to recall what the LORD commanded the generation of Israelites that experienced the events described in v. 7. Note the statement in v. 11, “my people did not listen to me.”

The practice in the request. "Hear, O my people" (Psalm 81:8). The flesh is so domineering that we often have to be exhorted to listen to God speak. We are prone to listen to everyone and everything else but God.
The prerequisite in the request. "I will testify unto thee; O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me" (Psalm 81:8). The hearing (the words translated "hear" and "hearken" are the same Hebrew words) involves obeying as well as listening and is a prerequisite to receiving the message of God. If you do not listen and obey, you will not receive. Many do not get much out of the Scripture because they do not read the Bible, and if they do read the Bible, they do not obey the Bible. Seminary and Bi+ble college training can help one understand the Scripture but more important than seminary and Bible college is listening to and obeying what God says to us. That will open your understanding better than anything else.
2. The Rules for the Faithful (Psalm 81:9)
Ex 20:3 — "You shall have no other gods before Me.
Dt 32:12 — "The LORD alone guided him, And there was no foreign god with him.
Ps 44:20 — If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god,
Isa 43:12 — "It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses," declares the LORD, "And I am God.
Israel was prone to idolatry and here is forbidden to have other gods than Jehovah God.
No presence of a false god. "There shall no strange god be in thee" (Psalm 81:9). No other gods, particularly idols, were to even be in the presence of the Israelites. Their dwellings were to be swept clean of such abominable things.
No prostration to false god. "Neither shalt thou worship any strange god" (Psalm 81:9). If the gods are present, they will be worshiped. This is a lesson on temptation. "Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof (Romans 13:14) is the same principle as forbidding the presence of idols. Do not encourage temptation.
The Reminder for the Faithful (Psalm 81:10) (preaching tension from v9 to 10a)
Israel was given a strong twofold reminder to help their fidelity to Jehovah God.
The Sovereign in the reminder. "l am Lord thy God" (Psalm 81:10). The God they were to worship and serve is plainly indicated. "Lord" is "Jehovah" the great "I am" of Exodus 3:14.
The salvation in the reminder. "Which brought thee out of the land of Egypt" (Psalm 81:10). Jehovah God had done for them what other gods could not do for them. He had brought about the greatest deliverance in the history of Israel. His miracles were many and powerful.
3. The Reward for the Faithful (Psalm 81:10)
From the first day of Creation, when he created everything from nothing, God has been filling nothingness with his goodness. His very nature is to fill emptiness with his fullness. He longs to satisfy us with Himself.
A reward for blessing is given at the end of this section on fidelity to Jehovah God. It comes in the form of a requirement.
job 29:23 — "They waited for me as for the rain, And opened their mouth as for the spring rain.
Ps 37:4 — Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Ps 78:25 — Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.
Ps 107:9 — For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
The requirement for the reward. "Open thy mouth wide" (Psalm 81:10). To open the mouth wide shows desire for the blessing. Like baby birds in the nest, if you want blessing, you must open you mouth—and the wider the opening the more the blessing. The opening of the mouth wide also shows much faith.
The response in the reward. "I will fill it" (Psalm 81:10). God responds faithfully and abundantly to fulfill His promise. Lack of blessing is not God's fault, but our fault. Before you castigate God for not filling your mouth with blessing, check to see just how wide open your mouth is. How great is your faith? How earnest is your desire for His blessings? Analytical Bible Expositor - Psalms.
2 Timothy 2:11–13 KJV 1900
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
1 Thessalonians 5:24 KJV 1900
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
Hebrews 10:23 KJV 1900
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
Habakkuk 2:3 KJV 1900
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, But at the end it shall speak, and not lie: Though it tarry, wait for it; Because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
