INTRODUCTION
We know that when we become Christians, we cannot act any old kind of way
We are to emulate Christ Phil 2:5 “Let this mind...
Colossians 3:8–9 ESV
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
Colossians 3:12 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
HOW DO WE DO THIS
Note: NO ONE MATURES WITHOUT EFFORT

1. Take Control

· No control who parents were, what era
· Take charge of life to give it to Christ (No one will do this for you)
· Seeing self as victim or waiting to act is a sign of imperfection/immaturity
Romans 8:38–39 ESV
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2. Take Responsibility

· You are responsible for what you do (Solomon - Ps 51, parodical son - LK 15 ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ )
They did not alibi, and they did not blame others
· Easy to say difficult to do
· Take on obligations and fulfill them
· Marriage, work
· A Mature person does not see them as burdens but as obligations
Romans 14:10–13 ESV
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.

3. Contain Emotions

· Don’t ignore – contain
· The old man lashes out at boss or coworker if something does not go their way
· Argue with spouse when they come home
· Our turn to drugs or alcohol because of a rough day
· Maturity measure how much anxiety you can tolerate without acting out inappropriately against yourself or others
· Mature folk express emotions in the right time, right place and right way
· We are emotional beings – the new man does not let go of the steering wheel
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Proverbs 25:28 ESV
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

4. Have Perspective

· New man puts disappointments into perspective. Some folk ruin a lifetime of friendship over a misunderstanding
· Life’s disappointments don’t stop after you’re 21
· Disappointments happen throughout life (“In this life you will have tribulation)
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5. Achieve Deep Understanding

· What do you mean by that, How did you come to that conclusion, have you ever considered
· You achieve greater intimacy
Colossians 3:12–14 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
