Matthew 5:27–28 CSB
27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Teaching — Next is the Application
Matthew 5:29–30 CSB
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Not teaching to mutilate yourself, teaching the seriousness of the sin, nothing is worth going to hell, — In context, Adultery is serious, therefore I can’t say next section is not just as serious
Matthew 5:31–32 CSB
31 “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. 32 But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Matthew includes exception clause, but let’s talk about the rule before we talk about the exception — Why is it adultery? Because you are still married.
Matthew 19:1–6 CSB
1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he departed from Galilee and went to the region of Judea across the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some Pharisees approached him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?” 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that he who created them in the beginning made them male and female, 5 and he also said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
What God has joined — you are joined, bound, married according to God. So why did Moses allow for divorce?
Matthew 19:7–8 CSB
7 “Why then,” they asked him, “did Moses command us to give divorce papers and to send her away?” 8 He told them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts, but it was not like that from the beginning.
hardness of hearts on both sides, keep in context of rule, not exception — “It’s you or no one for the rest of my life!” — Jesus’ teaching too difficult to accept.
Matthew 19:9–10 CSB
9 I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery.” 10 His disciples said to him, “If the relationship of a man with his wife is like this, it’s better not to marry.”
Disciples thought Jesus’ teaching on remarriage was too extreme. They would rather not marry than be stuck to one woman for the rest of their lives, regardless of future circumstances. Jesus’ response
Matthew 19:11–12 CSB
11 He responded, “Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs who were made by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept it should accept it.”
Some have chosen to remain celibate for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, in context we are talking about those who have been divorced and choose to remain unmarried. — Other teachings on the topic
Mark 10:1–12 CSB
1 He set out from there and went to the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Then crowds converged on him again, and as was his custom he taught them again. 2 Some Pharisees came to test him, asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He replied to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away.” 5 But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. 6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother 8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 10 When they were in the house again, the disciples questioned him about this matter. 11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Luke
Luke 16:18 CSB
18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and everyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
This is all of Jesus’ teachings on the topic, but before we look at the exceptions, let’s look at Moses’ teaching, and Paul’s teachings.
Deuteronomy 24:1 CSB
1 “If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.
Is it he may, or is it and
Deuteronomy 24:1 NASB95
1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house,
If vav means and (20,000 out of 33,000 times) then this is not the end of the sentence.
Deuteronomy 24:2–4 CSB
2 If after leaving his house she goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he dies, 4 the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the Lord. You must not bring guilt on the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
if she was divorced in God’s sight, like those in Jesus’ day would have argued because Moses permitted the legitimate divorce, then why would she become defiled? Because, in God’s eyes, they were still married, but separated because of the hardness of their hearts.
Romans 7:2–3 CSB
2 For example, a married woman is legally bound to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law regarding the husband. 3 So then, if she is married to another man while her husband is living, she will be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law. Then, if she is married to another man, she is not an adulteress.
death dissolves marriage in God’s sight
1 Corinthians 7:10 CSB
10 To the married I give this command—not I, but the Lord—a wife is not to leave her husband.
Paul is saying that this is what Jesus taught on the subject. —
1 Corinthians 7:11 CSB
11 But if she does leave, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband—and a husband is not to divorce his wife.
He then goes on to address issues they wrote him about, that Jesus never addressed
1 Corinthians 7:12–15 CSB
12 But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy by the husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. A brother or a sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace.
Paul said the only teachings I have from Jesus are don’t divorce, if you do, don’t remarry because it is adultery. — The exception —
Matthew 5:31–32 CSB
31 “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. 32 But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
and mt19.9
Matthew 19:9 CSB
9 I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery.”
seems to clearly be an exception, but under what limits of pornea? As a pastor, I can’t navigate the circumstances, Yes to guy who checks out girl but No to girl who is beaten and abused by husband? — Exception can’t nullify the rule through grief without repentance
2 Corinthians 7:9–10 CSB
9 I now rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance. For you were grieved as God willed, so that you didn’t experience any loss from us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly grief produces death.
Grief is not repentance, turning from sin is repentance, can you be saved and live in unrepentant sin? Yes — God disciplines the saved when they sin
Hebrews 12:3–13 CSB
3 For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won’t grow weary and give up. 4 In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly or lose heart when you are reproved by him, 6 for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and punishes every son he receives. 7 Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline—which all receive—then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness. 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead.
And we have an example of it in the same letter as Paul’s teachings on marriage, the church was sinning during the Lord’s Supper
1 Corinthians 11:27–32 CSB
27 So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep. 31 If we were properly judging ourselves, we would not be judged, 32 but when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we may not be condemned with the world.
So where does that leave me? In an impossible spot and a hypocritical one, I won’t tell you that an adulteress marriage is not sinful, and I won’t tell you you should separate, in case the other pastors are correct, so I’m left with no where to go until I get clarity.
Matthew 5:19 CSB
19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Regardless of what you’ve done already, you must teach that remarriage is adultery because God still considers you married
