What really matters?

If there is one thing that this Covid-19 Pandemic has done, it has caused to reevaluate our lives and has helped us to realize what is really important. What really matters? Does money really matter? Does prestige? Does being well thought of? Does Politics really matter? Does having the best stuff?
Paul reminds the Phillipians and us as well this mornng that the flesh and the things that we have in the flesh don’t really matter. In fact he says that he puts no confidence in the flesh v.3 You see its not the external things that really count, it is whats happening on the inside and who it is that doing it that matters.
Paul says you want to boast in the flesh, I have more to boast about than anyone. He came form the right family, he has the right credentials, prestige, power, passion, financial security. He had it all and at tthe end of the day he consider rubbish, loss for the sake of Christ
Each of the outward privileges in Paul’s catalog had at one time been a distinct and separate gain, individual items of profit. Now—they are all one big bundle of loss; loss because they are useless. Everything is garbage compared to gaining Christ.
If all those external things don’t matter, then what does?
#1 knowing Christ (7-10) know ing Christ is what really matters
You want to know why we struggle with our faith, you want to know why we struggle following Jesus, you want to know why our commitment to Christ is not what it should be. It’s because we don’t consider all things as loss for the sake of Christ.
at the end of the day the value of knowing Christ is not the most import thing to us. Knowing Christ is only one thing on a list of alot of things that really matter to us.
Philippians 3:7 NASB95
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
the most crucial of all matters is knowing Christ
Paul counts ALL things to be loss in view of know Christ Jesus My Lord - How about you this morning do you count all things as loss in view of knowing Christ Jesus your Lord? What value to you place on Jesus? Is he really what matters to you? Is he what is really important to you?
Like Paul would suffer the loss of all things for Christ, so that you would gain Christ? What would you give up for Christ? What would you loose for Christ?
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Seven: Learning How to Count (Philippians 3:1–11)

In Paul’s case, the “things” he was living for before he knew Christ seemed to be very commendable: a righteous life, obedience to the Law, the defense of the religion of his fathers. But none of these things satisfied him or gave him acceptance with God.

Like most “religious” people today, Paul had enough morality to keep him out of trouble, but not enough righteousness to get him into heaven! It was not bad things that kept Paul away from Jesus—it was good things! He had to lose his “religion” to find salvation.

another thing that Paul considered loss was self righteousness. At the end of the day he of all people cpuld check off the boxes but he would still be found wanting only in Jesus can true righteousness be obtained. apart from jesus there is no righteousness. For some reason we still try to gain that righteousness ourselves but only in Christ is it possible to be made righteous.
that's one of the reasons why knowing Christ is so valuable. His experience with Christ was so tremendous that it transformed his life. But now he had a Friend, a Master, a constant Companion!
we receive righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ not based on my own righteousness
power of his resurrection -
Ephesians 1:18–21 NASB95
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Ephesians 3:13–21 NASB95
Therefore I ask you not to lose heart at my tribulations on your behalf, for they are your glory. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
