How to Rear Your Parents
How to Rear Your Parents
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
11 These things command and teach.
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
We all know the scriptures -
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
and this is right!
BUT, does that mean that the parent is always right?
no… (most of the time, but not always)
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Youth.... Jesus was called a child, and he was 12 -
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
David was called a youth - probably 17
by Saul
by Goliath...
I Sam 17 - 31-42
David was not intimidated, nor was he discouraged…
in our text, Timothy was probably 38-40 years old… Youth is relative...
I remember older people calling college students, young 20 somethings - kids… I would always think… what are they talking about - they are not kids… they are adults...
Now I am one of them that look at 20 / 30 year olds and younger and think - kids… young people, youth
Youth David in 1 Sam 17 was
disregarded
ignored
minimalized
dismissed...
Timothy - by paul - referred to, or pointed out that youth was not bad...
“let no man despise thy youth...”
let… to allow - to give permission...
age just validate a person, and it should not in validate a person
lets be worthy of the investment
How can I stop someone - from dismissing me?
Be respectful
treat people with respect
treat mom and dad with respect
we all want respect, but we will not get it from people that we do not give it to...
siblings
piers
Be honorable
honest
hardworking
Be Attentive
Jesus was attentive to the scribes and pharisee’s and he ultimately won their admiration
Timothy was attentive to Paul - everyone notices when someone is attentive
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
Be Teachable
learn...
listen
don’t argue
don’t fight
don’t know it all -
Jesus knew it all, but he asked the adults in the rooms the questions - this showed respect, this showed deference.
“Every man knows something that I do not know, hence, all men are become my teachers” Jack Hyles
5. Be Obedient
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
