Attitude of an Overcomer

Romans 8:28–39 CSB

28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified. 31 What, then, are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything? 33 Who can bring an accusation against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies. 34 Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the one who died, but even more, has been raised; he also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us. 35 Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: Because of you we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The five-year-old ringbearer was obviously worried as he looked down the long aisle of the church where his aunt was to be married the following day. His grandmother had an idea. “I think I’ll give a prize to the person who does the best job tomorrow,” she told him. The ringbearer’s chin went up. There were fourteen others in the wedding party, not counting the minister. “I still think I can do it,” he whispered. The next day, the church filled, and the organ sounded triumphantly. When it was time, the little boy walked to the front with his head held high. At the reception, when his grandmother told him he had won the prize, he was both excited and relieved. “I was pretty sure I had it,” he admitted, “until Aunt Dana came in wearing that white dress and the horn was blowing. Then I started thinking—she might win!”

1. The Attitude of an Overcomer is not to settle for what happens, but to make things happen

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Your attitude determines your altitude

Get rid of the victim mentality

God is at work through everything that happens

You should carry a sign that reads, “Work in progress”

You are a work in progress don’t settle for what is passing by (song lyric)

Your destination is better than the journey (This could be a song)

2. The Attitude of an Overcomer sees setbacks as a setup for a comeback

If it didn’t kill you, it should have taught you something

If you survived, God is not done with you

Isaiah 54:17 NIV84

17 no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord.

God’s got your back

Don’t quit, you’ve come too far to quit now

Don’t let the outside influences distract you from the joy that is in the Lord

3. The Attitude of an Overcomer doesn’t set limitations

13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Learn to protect your heart

Don’t let junk come in

Junk in junk out

You are valuable

God made you on purpose

Rejection is just a sign to keep going

4. The Attitude of an Overcomer speaks life in the midst of death

Psalm 23:4 NIV84

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Don’t just speak what is in front of you

Don’t just speak what you experience

Don’t just speak what you see

Speak those things that are not as though they were

Let the weak say, “I am strong”

21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Don’t help the haters by repeating death words

Speak life

You may feel like you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, speak life

5. The Attitude of an Overcomer is to live victoriously in all circumstances

Overcomers are assured that God is working in all things

Don’t sweat the small stuff and the big stuff

God is still in control

God has good plans for you

If you are going through a difficult time, keep on going through, don’t stop

Don’t let circumstances define you

Circumstances change, God never changes

His plan for you is not dictated by circumstances

We are more than conquerors

We are overcomers

Have an Overcomer’s Attitude and live victoriously
