Intro:
Looking for purpose. In a job looking for the best way we can fit. In the Kingdom, all of us have an assignment.
1 Timothy 1:18–20 ESV
18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

The Charge

We see in this passage Paul giving Timothy a charge.
Its a cont. of V3, for him to go back and remain in Ephasis to weed out the false teaching and heal the damege done
While this call is particular to Timothy, we all have a call that we must seek, a Charge from God. Part of this is general ministry. Sometimes this is direct sometimes its not. Most pastors when ordained have a charge given in the service.
Charge may be the general call to ministry or Tims specific call. It is continued from the call in V3.
Take my life and let it be: Take My Will
This call may change and we should change with it.
App: Seek your call

Fight the Good Fight

Connection to:
2 Timothy 4:6–7 ESV
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Remain faithful
Continue to focus on our call.
The prophesies made about him seem to have happened when the Elders laid hands on him which is recounted later in this letter.
(Bring back) Charge may be the general call to ministry or Tims specific call. It is continued from the call in V3.
It seems the charge is something to all, remaining faithful. The charge that is particular to Timothy is Ephesus.
Acts 20:29–32 ESV
29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
App: Even in the most difficult times we must hold to our faith
Ill: Xns in closed countries difficult situations.

Faith and Good Conscience

Tied together
Together they build well, apart they fall.
Faith - Belief holding to Christ
Good Conscience - One’s moral self-eval accurately registers that one has been obedient to God.
App: Do that. Earnestly evaluate even when its hard. Look for someone who will be honest. Keep the faith and self evaluate, have accountability partners
Ill: Mechanic. When something starts feeling off in a car you check it. Normally its easier to fix early. If you wait, you may blow up.
Elders at West Sub. Body of Christ. Help each other, call something else when its seen. Honestly listen.

Shipwrecked from Faith

Those in the church that have shown to not be of the church
Rejecting the faith they heard and saw in practice.
These two mentioned would have been known by Timothy and may be mentioned in 2 Timothy, but we aren’t certain its the same Alexander.
We see Hymenaeus teaching falsely about the coming resurrection that it had already come.
When it says handed over to Satan it is not what it may sound like
It is sending them from the safety of the church.
He did not do anything to literally offer them to Satan, rather they were put out of the membership for the health and safety of the whole church. This is what we see in Matt 18 and later in this passage.
The goal in anything like this is reconciliation and healing.
We all have a charge we must seek it out and work to fulfill it we need to see all we are commanded to be.
This short passage shows:
We must hear our charge
Remain Faithful
Do all in Faith and Good Conscience
Do the difficult thing
We must hear our charge
We must hear our charge
Remain Faithful
We must hear our charge
Remain Faithful
Do all in Faith and Good Conscience
We must hear our charge
Remain Faithful
Do all in Faith and Good Conscience
Do the difficult thing
Take my will and make it thine
All of this is for the glory of God and the mission of his church. Let us go out, even in this crazy time and do the work that we are called to do.
