Intro:

Introduce who I am.
My family.
Does anyone like to run?
Anyone ever run a 5k?
Anyone ever run a half marathon? 13.1 miles
Anyone ever run a marathon? 26.2 miles
Tell story of running on the beach
Fastest mile in the room?
A couple years ago a man by the name of Eliud Kipchoge (kenya) ran a marathon in just over 2 hrs. over 26 miles in 2 hours.
That’s a pace of 4:38 a mile
Did you know that being a Christian is like running in a race?
Hebrews 12:1–3 NIV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
A great cloud of witnesses is referring back to the previous chapter in Hebrews. Talking about Abel, noah, abraham, isaac, jacob, samson, david.
Anyone ever been to a gator game or fsu game?
And so its this picture of like being in a stadium filled with people and everyone is watching this race take place.
He says “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.
Need a volunteer - Tape around the ankles
This is what sin is like. This is what sin does to us. It’s a trap
So all of those things that we want because we are selfish. Those things we want that God doesn't want for us are things that entangle us, that wrap us up and prevent us from really running.
He uses a word call perseverance. This word means “to continue on under difficult circumstances.”
You see this race isn’t always easy. It comes with difficulties. Things we wouldn’t want.
Look at last school year.
The reality is there will probably be things this school
But we must press on.
How do we do this? We fix our eyes on Jesus.
We must always be thinking about Jesus. Of course we have great models in our faith but Jesus is the ultimate model.
What would Jesus have me do?
How would Jesus handle this?
How can I be Jesus to those that are around me?
Colossians 3:17 NIV
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
When we think about all that Jesus has done and what He endured to die on the cross for our sins. He didn’t give up. If anyone had any right to just throw in the towel and give up it was Jesus but He didn’t
He chose to persevere and chose to die for you. So that you could win the ultimate prize. A relationship with Creator of the universe.
