Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the gospel of John
Last Thursday when we looked at the second appearance of Jesus to His Disciples— we encountered several things that required us to take another look into this passage
I told you that when you come to situations like this, do not rush to conclude— you should write down your questions in your spiritual journal, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to the answers, and study further.... if you cannot come up with a confident conclusion, do not conclude!
If your personal study still do not convince you, talk to a Pastor
But before we revisit the passage we looked into last Thursday— let’s recall what we already learned from that passage:
MY FEAR IS TURNED TO JOY BECAUSE OF THE LORD’S PEACE
I AM SENT BY JESUS TO MAKE DISCIPLES THAT MAKES DISCIPLES
Now, let’s take a second look at this passage to see what can we still learn from it— open your Bible again to JOHN 20:19-23— once you get their I’d like you to type— “Let’s read it again!”— We’re almost done with John— 4 to 5 more days, or a week the most.
I’ll post a poll asking which book would you like us to study next— keep an eye on that post & cast your vote
CHARACTER OF GOD, SIN TO CONFESS, PROMISES TO CLAIM, ATTITUDE TO CHANGE, COMMANDS TO KEEP, EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW, PRAYERS TO PRAY, ERRORS TO AVOID, TRUTH TO BELIEVE, SOMETHING TO THANK GOD FOR

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Ok, since this is now our second look at this passage, you already know what was going on— what was the situation— and who are the people present
Let’s focus our study today on a couple of very important verses from this passage that led us to touch a very important doctrine on the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”
Let’s highlight these two important verses— JOHN 20:22-23
And now let’s break it down— be ready to write your notes because today’s sharing is not just important, but it is very rich on information that could really change your Christian way of life or walk with the Lord going forward

HE BREATHED ON THEM AND SAID, RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Take a look at the verb [action words] that was used here— “Breathed” [hiningahan— inangisan]— now when you breathe it involves air— to understand the correlation of this action and the Holy Spirit, let’s look at the characteristics of the Holy Spirit
The phrase “Holy Spirit” appeared in the NIV translation of the Bible— 94 times in 93 verses.
First the word Holy— [Greek Hagios— Strong’s Greek # 40— holy one, consecrated, sacred, set apart][Banal— Santo or Nasantoan]
And the word Spirit— [Greek Pneuma—Strong’s Greek #4151— air, breeze, breath] [Hangin— Hininga]
So we can say that Holy Spirit may be rephrased as “Sacred Air”— [Banal na Hangin]— and that gives so much sense on what Jesus did when it was recorded that our Lord Jesus breathed [hiningahan— sinangawanna] on them
Now that you see the sense behind the picture of the Lord’s act of breathing the Holy Spirit on them— I have to take you to some verses to better understand this act of our Lord
Why did He do it?
JOHN THE BAPTIST PRONOUNCED THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
In all four Gospels it was recorded that John the baptist pronounced that Jesus Christ will baptize his followers with the Holy Spirit— MATTHEW 3:11, LUKE 3:16, JOHN 1:33, MARK 1:7-8
John’s prophecy marked the transition from the Spirit occasionally anointing and filling rare individuals under the old covenant— to the widespread gift of the Spirit for God’s people under the new covenant.
Let me give you some instances in the Old Testament when the Holy Spirit occasionally fills some people chosen by God— Bezalel and Oholiab to make some holy articles for the tent of meeting [EXODUS 31:3]
God took some of the power of the Spirit from Moses and distributed it among the seventy selected Elders of Israel that eventually formed the Sanhedrin— [NUMBERS 11:17]
THE FATHER HAS PROMISED THE HOLY SPIRIT
Before Jesus ascended back to heaven he said— LUKE 24:49
JESUS CHRIST ASKED THE FATHER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT
I will ask the Father and He will give you another “advocate”— another term that refers to the Holy Spirit— [Greek Parakletos— Strong’s Greek # 3875— advocate, helper, intercessor]— JOHN 14:15-16, 26
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SEAL OF SALVATION
Say you’re an immigrant to this country, to legitimize your stay, they give you a seal of your residency. They call it the Green Card— [EPHESIANS 1:13]
THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS GIVEN TO US TO FORM THE CHURCH
After Paul explained to the church in Corinth the various gifts of the Holy Spirit, he said— 1 CORINTHIANS 12:13
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL GIVE THEM GUIDANCE AND VISION
Last July 20th we talked about the work of the Holy Spirit. And among His works are to give us guidance and vision— JOHN 16:13
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL EMPOWER THEM FOR MISSION
After telling his disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit— ACTS 1:8, 2:4, 4:31
JESUS DID NOT START HIS EARTHLY MINISTRY UNTIL HE WAS BAPTIZED
Jesus did not start his ministry until he was baptized by John and when the Holy Spirit descended on Him [MATTHEW 3:16-17]
WHO MAY BE BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Those who believed— When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. And then...— [ACTS 8:15]
Both the Jews and the Gentiles [Greek Ethnos— Strong’s Greek #1484— heathen, nation, people] my be baptized in the Holy Spirit— [ACTS 10:45]
I WAS BAPTIZED IN WATER, DO I STILL HAVE TO BE BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT?
Christians are split on this theological issue. Some hold that Spirit baptism is synonymous with the Spirit’s indwelling [time of conversion], while others believe it is a second act of grace only given to some believers [which is what I believe].
Just few moments ago we read a verse about the Samaritan believers baptized in the Holy Spirit by Peter and John. Take note they were already believers when they were baptized in the Holy Spirit by Pete and John— [ACTS 8:16-17]
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them— [ACTS 19:2-6]
If you look back at the passage today— Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on His disciples— remember, the disciples are already believers before this occured— they been with the Lord around three years prior to that
And take note also that this took place immediately after the Lord commanded them to carry out the Greatest Commandments and the Great Commission
Peter denied the Lord three times— but after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit— he became bold in preaching the very first sermon during the Pentecost and around 3,000 believers were added to their number that day— [ACTS 2:1-4]
After Paul was converted, Ananias laid his hands, and he received the Holy Spirit, and then he became one of, if not the greatest Christian that have ever lived— [ACTS 9:17]
Now, Sis. Tintin of New Zealand requested me to explain verse 23 further—we will go back to it tomorrow
I do not want to overwhelm you with information today because what we have covered today is so rich and truly important— I’ll let you digest that, and talk about Sis. Tintin’s question tomorrow
Meanwhile, from our extensive review of the facts behind the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”— here are three very important things that you should highly consider
