This section of 1 Corinthians covers unity in worship/ministry/building up the church properly and in order. – c11 honoring the head and caring for the body, c12 parts of the body functioning as a unit, c13 purpose of the body is love/compassion/mission, c14 order and function in unity for mission, c15 power of the body, new life.
1 Corinthians 12:31 More excellent way.
1 Corinthians 13 Love is the motivating factor. Without love, all else is meaningless.
1 Corinthians 13:13 The greatest is love.
1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love and have zeal for spiritual matters.
Tongues Or Prophecy?
Tongues Or Prophecy?
1 Corinthians 14:1-5 Prophesy and speak in tongues. Both communicating by the power of the Holy Spirit – a Spiritual manifestation – not just preaching or speaking a language.
Speak in tongues is language not necessarily known by speaker, speaking to God not men. Builds up self. Church only built up if there is an interpreter.
Prophesy = speak to people to encourage, strengthen, comfort. Builds up church.
Paul’s preference is for them to prophesy.
1 Corinthians 14:6-12 Paul compares speaking in tongues to musical instruments that do not play distinct notes. There is no tune and the music is not understood.
If someone doesn’t know the language, they are a foreigner who doesn’t understand.
V12 Since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit – they were focused on speaking in tongues as a sign giving it too much emphasis.
Paul encourages them to put that effort to building up the church rather than themselves.
1 Corinthians 14:13-19 Speak in tongues must also interpret, engaging both spirit and mind for understanding. V17 build up, v19 in order to instruct others.
This is talking about worship and prayer in the meeting more than in private.
Mature In Your Mindset
Mature In Your Mindset
Pre Application – change your thinking about tongues and prophecy
1 Corinthians 14:20-25 grow up in your understanding/perspective/mindset/attitude – do not grow in evil.
V22 Tongues are sign for unbelievers, prophecy for believers. (could be a statement they made but Paul shows the opposite is true – so grow up in your mindset. )
More likely, this is tied to 21 – tongues as a sign means 1 speaks and 1 interprets and the unbeliever gets it. V23 if they come in and everyone is speaking in tongues it will only freak them out.
V24 if they come in to everyone prophesying, they understand and are convicted. They see God through the understandable manifestation of His Spirit.

Application – change your behavior/actions
1 Corinthians 14:26-33 Order in the service with parts of the worship coming together and all for the building up of the people.
Specific order instructions – only 2-3 take turns speaking in tongues with interpreter or keep silent.
2-3 prophets speak in turn and then discussion groups. So that all learn.
God is not a god of confusion – do all orderly, God will speak through each in an orderly fashion.
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 could be an immediate issue among the Corinthians because this is not taught by Paul in other areas, just the opposite.
Also could be the Corinthians made this statement and Paul is giving rebuttal in 36.
1 Corinthians 14:39-40 conclusion eager to prophesy (build up the church) allow tongues (building up self) do all properly and in order.
