Lord, He Stinks

we have now come to the tomb
Jesus has wept with Mary
John 11:38 AV
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
instructs to remove the stone
John 11:39 AV
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
after all Jesus has said to her about believing
not resulting in death
seeing the Glory of God
the Glory of God is, the sum of who God is.
all of His attributes; His love, Justice, sovereignty, power, truth, wrath
The Holiness of God comprises the Glory of God
the more we behold the glory of God, the more we give God the Glory He deserves
God is about to show off His power and majesty
His sovereignty over live and death
Martha is still insisting its to late
Martha is informing Jesus that person is to far gone
not worth putting in the effort to move the boulder

Believing Is Seeing

we want to see first then believe
Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, With the Holy Spirit in us we are able to see the Glory of God, in
the Scriptures, creation,
we see the world through the eyes of God
John 11:40 AV
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
Jesus prayed for the glory of God
Jesus prayer was always answered
What is the purpose of our prayers?
Is it for the betterment of someone, or Gods glory?
John 11:41 AV
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

The Faith of Jesus

the faith of Jesus is an example to us today
John 11:42 AV
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
Jesus prayed so that the people could hear (public not in private corner)
He was trusting in the Father for this miracle
Through the Holy Spirit
Prayer of faith
John 11:43 AV
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
with a loud voice, that all could hear
His faith in His Father to bring Lazarus out alive
Our prayers need to be the same
with a full faith that The Father will answer
our prayer should be specific, for Gods Glory, and with faith that they will be answered
John 11:44 AV
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
The living, breathing, and probably hungry Lazarus came out

A Sign

All of John’s Miracles are a sign of the power and mission of Jesus
Water into wine- Jesus is the source of Joy in Abundance
healing of the nobleman's son- power over sickness
healing of the invalid- the helpless spiritual state which sin has brought on all men
Feeding of the 5000 - Jesus is the bread of life
walking on water- Jesus power over nature
Blind man- man is spiritually blind walking in darkness
Lazarus totally dead and stinkin
Dead are unable to do anything for themselves
Total Depravity
Reclaiming the Gospel and Reforming Churches: Twenty Years of the Southern Baptist Founders Conference 1982–2002
Total depravity means that there is no spiritual good in man. Man does not meet God’s standard. Any good in man can only be spoken of from an anthropocentric (man-centered) viewpoint because the minute we put our eyes upon the God of the universe, there is no good in man. He falls short at every point without exception.
Total depravity is the fact that by his very nature man does not meet God’s approval. Man cannot meet God’s approval, though he is totally responsible to the God of the universe to do so. He is responsible, but he does not desire to meet it and he cannot meet it. He is totally depraved. He is a sinner in the sense of the definition that we find in the Word of God.
Lazarus is dead, all human hope is gone,
Lazarus is a representation of the human condition
Romans 3:10–11 AV
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
as we have already seen in John
Lazarus is also a representation of God choosing whom He will save
John 6:44 AV
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
God first chooses
Article III of the Baptist Confession of 1644 states: “God had in Christ before the foundation of the world according to the good pleasure of his will foreordained some men to eternal life through Jesus Christ to the praise and glory of his grace leaving the rest in their sin to their just condemnation to the praise of his justice.”
All other people in that cemetery remained dead.
Only God can bring dead to life
only God can bring life into a body
Only God can give someone a new birth called regeneration
Whomever He Wills: A Surprising Display of Sovereign Mercy Monergistic Regeneration Matthew M Barrett
Regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit to unite the elect sinner to Christ by breathing new life into that dead and depraved sinner so as to raise him from spiritual death to spiritual life, removing his heart of stone and giving him a heart of flesh, so that he is washed, born from above and now able to repent and trust in Christ as a new creation.62 Moreover, regeneration is the act of God alone and therefore it is monergistic in nature, accomplished by the sovereign act of the Spirit apart from and unconditioned upon man’s will to believe. In short, man’s faith does not cause regeneration but regeneration causes man’s faith.

Our Responsibility

God wants to partner with us
He wants to use us for His Honor and Glory
so like Jesus had the people do their part
John 11:39 AV
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
Take away the stone
tell others about Jesus
prepare their hearts with the hearing of the power of the gospel
2 Timothy 2:24 NKJV
24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
2 Timothy 2:25 NKJV
25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
2 Timothy 2:26 NKJV
26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
If only God can bring people back
John 11:44 AV
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
We need to unbind new believers from the bondage of lies
a lot of newborn Christians are still wearing the graveclothes of their past life
disciple them
lead them into a life of freedom in Christ
teaching the truth, and a life of faith
Are you willing to move the stone? to do the prep work of telling the gospel?
