Rejection and Rest

Today’s Scripture comes from the Book of Matthew 11:20–29

Anyone remember when you were young when your parents had to threaten you to rest, to nap, to sleep? It really went from a loving request, instruction to a physical threat. Why? They knew when you were tired. They knew when you had overdone it and needed rest. Do you think God knows when we need the rest only He can provide for us?

The “scolding of Jesus” The rebuke.

A.There was a Problem.Matthew 11:20 “Then Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so many of his miracles, because they hadn’t repented of their sins and turned to God." Christ did great work in their cities, but the people refused to repent. Though miracles were done, they rejected Christ. The same is true today. We are set in our ways, our timing, our choices.

B. Places—vv. 21–23. Chorazin (unknown, but perhaps in northeastern Galilee); Bethsaida (see Luke 9:10); Tyre and Sidon (see 1 Kings 5:1); Capernaum in northeastern Galilee).Matthew 11:22–23 “22 I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you. 23 “And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today.” These cities heard Christ, but refused to accept Him.

C. Punishment.....Sodom would receive less punishment than these cities..Matthew 11:24 “I tell you, even Sodom will be better off on judgment day than you.”

DISCUSS MY THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY, POINT OUT NEW BELIEVERS WANTING TO KNOW HOW TO REMEMBER GOD’S WORD...

All people will be judged according to their acceptance of God’s Word. Christ will be the judge. He will be fair to all men.

The revelation of God’s Holy Word, we are told and instructed on the things we are to be doing.

A.God keeps the things, most things from the unbeliever. They are to be seeing Jesus through us..

Matthew 11:25–26 “25 At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!”

The things of God—spiritual concepts—are hidden from the non-Christian. One must be spiritual to understand spiritual things. Sometimes the noneducated person can understand more of God’s Word than the educated person does, if the noneducated person is open to the Holy Spirit.

B. We are constantly Shown Jesus, God’s Son but are we really paying attention? Matthew 11:27 “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” The Christian understands God’s plan and purpose in several ways:

1. The Holy Spirit (John 16:13) tells us: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” The Holy Spirit reveals spiritual things to us.

2. We are told in Scripture. 2 Timothy 3:15 “You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.” So when we are in Scripture, Studying God’s Word, we begin to understand God’s instruction for our lives.

3. What about Sincerity? John tells us in John 7:17: “Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.”....... If we follow Christ, He will show us right from wrong. Isn’t it pretty obvious when we are hearing a Pastor if their teaching, their preaching is from the Holy Spirit?

Born-again Christians know God’s way and Word. They have special insight into the future and are used to prepare God’s kingdom.

Anyone of us need “The rest from knowing Jesus” today?

A. Jesus is asking, Requesting, pleading us to depend on HIm...... Matthew 11:28 “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

1. People, Church, neighbors, family—“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden.”

2. We can begin to rest when we know and follow God’s Plan, He knows what we deal with everyday.—“And I will give you rest.” Actually this means peace and satisfaction in our daily life. Sounds pretty awesome don’t you think?

B. Anyone listening today need rest besides me? I have been to visit hospitals many times since this virus, visiting the sick. I observe the “weary” these healthcare workers. Look at the single working parent today, think they need rest and the strength that only they can find in Jesus? Rest for the soul comes when we “take the yoke of Christ” upon us.Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

C. Great results come from great faith...... Matthew 11:30 Jesus says “For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” God’s way is easy compared with the way that sin and Satan offer. “Loving God means doing what He tells us to do, and that really isn’t hard at all” 1 John 5:3 “Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome."
