Introduction

What an amazing night. Thank each of you for praising the Lord this evening with your gifts, talents, and abilities.
If you have your Bibles, open them up to Psalm 33
I want us to take a look here at this Psalm and spend a few minutes talking about worship.
Follow along with me as I read please.
Ps 33:1-3
Psalm 33:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: For praise is comely for the upright. 2 Praise the Lord with harp: Sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise.
PRAY
The first verse of this psalm calls for the righteous to rejoice in the Lord and that praise is comely or beautiful for the upright.
Now if you know your Bible you know that we are not righteous people, we are not upright. So how do we worship God?
We have to be saved. We have to understand the gospel. We have to know there is no righteousness in us and that the only righteousness we have is bestowed on us through faith in Christ.
So with hearts humbled and and trusting in Jesus we worship God.
Why do we worship God though? What is the reason for worship?
There are three things this Psalm reminds about as reasons to worship God. Notice First God’s Character

I. God’s Character

Ps 33:4-5
Psalm 33:4–5 KJV 1900
4 For the word of the Lord is right; And all his works are done in truth. 5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
Many of the false gods of the surrounding nations were distant and selfish where as God is faithful and just. He is filled with love that never ends.
God’s merciful, forgiving, and just. Who God is, is reason enough to worship Him. But how do you know Who God is?
How did you get to know your spouse? How did you get to know your best friend? You spent time with them and got to know them. Worshipping God doesn’t just happen because there is a good song on the radio. It starts with an understanding of who God is by knowing Him through His Word.
Then in verses 6-7 we see another reason to worship God is because of God’s Creation.

II. God’s Creation

John 1:1
John 1:1 KJV 1900
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Col 1:16
Colossians 1:16 KJV 1900
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Jesus was there in the beginning when all things were spoke into existence. All those things that were created are wonderful, beautiful, and perfect. They were created by God and for Him.
No matter how much we try we cannot create something from nothing. God spoke everything into existence from nothing. He did not create everything for us. He didn’t create all of this for us to be able to admire. He created it for himself and if we don’t worship Him, creation will.
Luke 19:39-40
Luke 19:39–40 KJV 1900
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Because of Who God is, we should worship. Because we are His creation, we should worship.
Lastly notice God’s completion

III. God’s Completion

Ps 33:10-12
Psalm 33:10–12 KJV 1900
10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: He maketh the devices of the people of none effect. 11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, The thoughts of his heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; And the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
God’s purposes will always work out. This passage could be understood as this “
The Lord frustrates the counsel of the nations;
he thwarts the plans of the peoples.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the plans of his heart from generation to generation.”
Kings and governments can seek to work out their plans but whether they know it or like it, the Lords plan will be accomplished.
Not only did this virus not surprise God but the response of the governments didn’t either. He knows whats happening and will happen. I’m to be full of care for none of it because He’s got it under control.
Verse 12 says
ps 33:12
Psalm 33:12 KJV 1900
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; And the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
When the Lord is our God we are blessed. Not always in a physical sense but in the way that we live our lives we will be blessed, I believe, because we understand who is in control and we don’t have to get bent out of shape over whats happening around or to us.
Remember the words of Job
Job 1:21
Job 1:21 KJV 1900
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return thither: The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Job blessed, praised, and worshipped the name of the Lord in some of the most difficult circumstances any of us could face.
How was He able to do that? Because job knew God. Job knew the character of God. Job knew the creation of God. Job knew the completion of God.

Conclusion

Tonight as we have listened to these songs and sung them together I pray it was from a heart of worship to the Lord.
Tomorrow when you wake up, I pray you will worship the Lord. Not because a song is on or how great life may be, but because of God. Because of Who He is and what He has done.
When I say what He has done I don’t mean what you or others may perceive as blessings in your life. I mean what He did by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for your sins.
That’s definitely something to worship God for.
