Welcome
Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of these witnesses, to join Rachel and Jeremy in Holy Matrimony; and On behalf of the families of the bride and groom, we welcome those of you who have come to witness this wedding.
Prayer
Our Father, we come before you on this holy occasion with our hearts filled with the spirit of love and thanksgiving.
We praise and worship you as the giver of life and creator of all good things. As we enter into this service, we give you thanks for the holy union of marriage, the most sacred of all human relationships.
We pray for your presence here today and your blessings upon Rachel and Jeremy as they enter their new life together. Above all else, we thank you for Jesus, who gives meaning, direction, and hope. We pray this in his name. Amen.
(Please be seated)
(At this point, the minister, bride, groom, maid of honor, and best man may move to the platform, the earlier parts of the service having taken place immediately in front of the platform.)
Statement of Purpose
God is the author of love. The Bible teaches that God is love, and that love comes from God. From beginning to end, the Bible is a love story.
Here we read of God’s love for his people, of the love that sent Christ to the cross, The redeeming love for the sinner, The abiding love for the redeemed.
We read also of the love of man and woman: of Jacob’s love for Rachel, of Mary pledged to Joseph.
In the beginning, when the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and placed him in the Garden of Eden, Adam was lonely. So the Lord God made a companion and helper for him. When Adam saw Eve, he was no longer lonely.
God can lead us to our life’s companion. And we are excited that God has guided Rachel and Jeremy to this moment;
He has blessed their love and brought them together to enter into the holy union of marriage.
I’ve spent a lot of time with them over the last couple months and we discussed a lot of things. And I’ve seen the Love between them.
So it is now time for the two to become one.
Unity Painting Ceremony
Every marriage starts out as a blank canvas and every day is a new splash of color.
This canvas represents the day of the wedding, a new beginning, a fresh start.
With this new canvas you will be able to paint new experiences, new celebrations, new passions and new dreams.
The paint colors signify everyone’s favorite colors… There will be places on the canvas when the colors blend and mix, flowing together. This is a representation of today, as Rachel and Jeremy have blended there families together to become one.
The colors will mark the experiences that lie ahead; colors of joys and sorrows, blessings and heartache.
There will be places when the colors stay separate and stand out alone and independent… there may be places of contrast, areas on the canvas that look blotched or messy - but these are all part of the journey.
Let’s paint!!!
Although their are parts that are left blank and bare, when you step back and look at the canvas in its entirety, you will see that it clearly is “An Original Masterpiece” unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
Rachel , Jeremy, Grace, CJ, Ella, and Jo each color, contrast, shadow, and blend, make this a unique piece of art to commemorate the family unity in the days, months, and years to come.
(kids may be seated)
Declaration of Consent
To Groom: Jeremy, will you have this woman to be your wife, to live together in the holy covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor her, and keep her in sickness and in health and, forsaking all others, be faithful to her so long as you both shall live? If so, answer, “I will.”
To Bride: Rachel, will you have this man to be your husband, to live together in the holy covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him in sickness and in health and, forsaking all others, be faithful to him so long as you both shall live? If so, answer, “I will.”
1 Corinthians 13:4 ESV
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
1 Corinthians 13:5 ESV
or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
1 Corinthians 13:6 ESV
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
1 Corinthians 13:7 ESV
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:13 ESV
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Sermon
Rachel and Jeremy, the ceremony of marriage in which you come to be united is the first and oldest ceremony in the entire world, celebrated in the beginning in the presence of God. Marriage is a gift of God, given to comfort the sorrows of life and too magnify its joys. Today is beautiful but what happens after today is what counts… Remember Love is patient!!!
Good Advice
First, never go to bed angry.
Even though this is one of the happiest days of your life, there will come those times when you are frustrated—those days when everything seems to go wrong and you are really upset with each other.
Don’t go to bed angry...
Proverbs 15:1 ESV
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Don’t allow your frustration to build to where you say some words that you will regret or don’t really mean.
Talk it through, resolve it—and then put it behind you. Don’t go to bed angry.
Second: Keep a sense of humor.
Sometimes things happen that aren’t your fault; they just happen. Yet you have to deal with them.
Proverbs 17:22 ESV
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
I think sometimes we can take ourselves too seriously. Keep a sense of humor.
When things don't go exactly how you planned them to go, it's ok to laugh it off.
Third: Communicate & Clarify, Communicate & Clarify.
Now my guess is that you do that pretty well now, but it gets harder as time goes on to share what you are thinking, what you are feeling, and what is going on in your heart!
You can’t read each other’s mind, so be determined to make the extra effort to talk with each other.
We are not mind readers so make sure to express what you’re feeling, and as one of you is expressing their feelings the other should take the time to really listen.
Fourth: Continue to build your relationship.
Just because you are getting married doesn’t mean that you have built the best relationship you will ever have.
The truth is, you are just beginning! Be determined to improve your relationship.
The apostle Paul said it this way in...
Romans 12:10 ESV
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
challenge one another to put the other first!
If each of you puts the other first, just imagine the happiness that you will experience.
And finally, make sure that as a couple you invite God to be a part of your lives, and a part of your home.
Proverbs 3:5 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:6 ESV
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
In other words, if you will allow God to take up residence in your home, he will make your paths straight. He will bless you.
Someone said that marriage is a journey—always changing.
And with the change come different joys, different challenges, And different heartaches. But if you will follow this advice, your joys will be richer, because God is a part of them.
The Marriage Vows
Rachel and Jeremy, please join hands and express your vows of love and devotion.
The couple holds hands and faces each other.
To the Groom: Jeremy, repeat this vow to Rachel after me: I, Jeremy, take you, Rachel, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do us part; as God is my witness, I give you my promise.
To the Bride: Likewise, Rachel, repeat this vow to Jeremy after me: I, Rachel, take you, Jeremy, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do us part; as God is my witness, I give you my promise.
The Exchange of Rings
Having this kind of love in your hearts, you have chosen to exchange rings as the sign and seal of the vows you are making today.
(Take rings from best man.)
Though small in size, these rings are very large in significance. Made of precious metal, they remind us that love is neither cheap nor common; indeed, love may cost us dearly.
Made in a circle, their design tells us that love must never come to an end; we must keep it continuous.
As you wear these rings, whether together or apart for a moment, may they be constant reminders of the promises that you are making today.
To Groom: Jeremy , will you take your ring and place it upon Rachel left hand, and repeat after me this promise:
I give you this ring as a symbol of my vow, and with all that I am, and all that I have, “Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” I honor you; in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
To Bride: Rachel, will you take your ring and place it upon Jeremy’s left hand, and repeat after me this promise:
I give you this ring as a symbol of my vow, and with all that I am, and all that I have, “Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” I honor you; in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer for the Bride and Groom
Our Father, we come today as family, friends, asking your blessing upon these two lives and this home being established.
You have made us so that we are incomplete without the other so that we yearn for someone whom we can love and whose love we can receive.
We are thankful for the love we see here, and even more, for the love we feel from you.
May we never take your love for granted.
We pray that your love will be the shield and protection for Rachel and Jeremy.
When joy comes, may they share it together.
When sorrow threatens, may they bear it together.
In gladness or in tears, in sunshine or shadow, may they ever draw closer to each other and nearer to you.
Grant them patience, gentleness, forbearance, and understanding.
Protect their home from those forces that would try to break it apart.
We ask for health, for long life, for the fulfillment of every good dream.
May their love continue through life and, into the life eternal.
We pray these things in confidence, in the strong name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Pronouncement of Marriage
You have come before us and before God and have expressed your desire to be husband and wife.
You have shown your love and affection by joining hands, have made promises of faith and devotion, each to the other, and have sealed these promises by the giving and receiving of rings.
I, therefore, pronounce that you are husband and wife.
May God bless you and keep you and give you his peace.
What God has joined together, let no man separate. Amen.
Jeremy you may kiss your bride!
By the authority given to me as a representative and a minister of the gospel, It is my privilege to present to you Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Sampson!
