I. The Characters

A. The Englishmen

D. The Reformation

II. The Setting

A. First, there is England. Within it’ hierarchical society where there were
a) Limited opportunities for wealth
b) limited freedom (political and religious)
B. Second, there was the New World. Its unexplored land offered:
1. An abundance of wealth (land/opportunities)
2. Just POSSIBILITIES endless

III. The Plot:

A. What Problems Prompted the Move?

1. The Problem of Wealth Building

a Tradition prevented families from selling land
b Tradition held on the first born could inherit the land
c Younger siblings had little to no hope of owning land

2. The Problem of Politics

a The problem of the Magna Carta not providing enough political benefits

i. Though It Limited the power of the Monarch
ii. Though It guaranteed certain basic right of the nobility
iii. Still The masses still were subject to government abuse
iv. Still The masses still had a limited voice

3. The Problem of Religion

a. The Anglican church (Church of England) embraced the theology of the Reformation only in partial ways but continues to operate according to Catholic practices

4. The Problem of Boredom

B. How Did They Resolve the Problems?

1. They moved the to new world in search of five things

a. Wealth
b. Land
c. Political Freedom
d. Religious Freedom
e. Adventure

IV. THEME: PRINCIPLE: EFFECTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING

A. Problems are meant to be solved but how you choose to solve them is almost more important than solving them and living with the consequences of your decision is even more important.

1. Their desire for freedom of religion would create controversy

2. Their desire for adventure was costly

B. Solving problems demands the following of us:

That we do not move, primarily because we see the grass as greener on the other side
That we do not move without getting as much information as we can
That we do not move without thinking about the consequences of our move
