Time of Uzziah 2 Chron. 26
2 Kings 15:3–4 NASB95
He did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. Only the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
2 Kings 15:16–21 NASB95
Then Menahem struck Tiphsah and all who were in it and its borders from Tirzah, because they did not open to him; therefore he struck it and ripped up all its women who were with child. In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king over Israel and reigned ten years in Samaria. He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel sin. Pul, king of Assyria, came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver so that his hand might be with him to strengthen the kingdom under his rule. Then Menahem exacted the money from Israel, even from all the mighty men of wealth, from each man fifty shekels of silver to pay the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned and did not remain there in the land. Now the rest of the acts of Menahem and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Micah 4:1–3 NASB95
And it will come about in the last days That the mountain of the house of the Lord Will be established as the chief of the mountains. It will be raised above the hills, And the peoples will stream to it. Many nations will come and say, “Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk in His paths.” For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war.
NOTE: you can’t share God’s light if you do not have the light withing yourselves
“last days” -
Acts 2:17 NASB95
And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;
Hebrews 1:2 NASB95
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
1 Pet. 1:5, 20
1 Peter 1:5 NASB95
who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1:20 NASB95
For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you
time divided into 3 catergories: O.T. Age/Messianic Age/ Last Days
“mountain of the house of the Lord”
Mt. Zion
Isaiah 18:7 NASB95
At that time a gift of homage will be brought to the Lord of hosts From a people tall and smooth, Even from a people feared far and wide, A powerful and oppressive nation, Whose land the rivers divide— To the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, even Mount Zion.
Isaiah 37:32 NASB95
“For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant and out of Mount Zion survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” ’
David brought the Ark of the covenant to Jerusalem
2 Samuel 6:12–19 NASB95
Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness. And so it was, that when the bearers of the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet. Then it happened as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. So they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. Further, he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed each to his house.
Solomon built the temple on Mt. Zion
1 Kings 8:1–10 NASB95
Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the city of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled themselves to King Solomon at the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. Then all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark. They brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting and all the holy utensils, which were in the tent, and the priests and the Levites brought them up. And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who were assembled to him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and oxen they could not be counted or numbered. Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubim. For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim made a covering over the ark and its poles from above. But the poles were so long that the ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place before the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen outside; they are there to this day. There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the Lord,
Spiritual type
Hebrews 12:22–24 NASB95
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.
1 Tim 3:15; Eph 2:19; 1 Pet 2:5
1 Timothy 3:15 NASB95
but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
Ephesians 2:19 NASB95
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,
1 Peter 2:5 NASB95
you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
“all nations will stream to it”
Acts 2:5,6; Eph 2:15ff; Gal 3:27ff
Acts 2:5 NASB95
Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
Acts 2:6 NASB95
And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
Ephesians 2:15ff NASB95
by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity. And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
Galatians 3:27ff NASB95
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
remember the seed promise
Genesis 12:3 NASB95
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Genesis 18:18 NASB95
since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
Genesis 26:4 NASB95
“I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
Galatians 3:7–8 NASB95
Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.
“He may teach us” fro the purpose of “walking in his paths” = learning the truth is for the purpose of living the truth!
He will teach us His ways—God would have His will taught, Christianity is a taught
religion Jer 31:31-34; Acts 2:14-39; Jn 6:44,45; Heb 8:8-13
Jeremiah 31:31–34 NASB95
“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Acts 2:14–39 NASB95
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. “For David says of Him, ‘I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will live in hope; Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’ “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay. “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.” Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
John 6:44 NASB95
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
John 6:45 NASB95
“It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.
Hebrews 8:8–13 NASB95
For finding fault with them, He says, Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, When I will effect a new covenant With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers On the day when I took them by the hand To lead them out of the land of Egypt; For they did not continue in My covenant, And I did not care for them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, And I will write them on their hearts. And I will be their God, And they shall be My people. And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ For all will know Me, From the least to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.” When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
“the law will go forth”
Romans 8:1–2 NASB95
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
James 1:25 NASB95
But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
Luke 24:47 NASB95
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
“will not lift up sword” = a nation of peace
the messiah is the prince of peace
Isaiah 9:6–7 NASB95
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
birth announced with peace
Luke 2:14 NASB95
“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
we are to pursue peace
1 Peter 3:11 NASB95
He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it.
Psalm 34:14 NASB95
Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.
a. Shows the peaceful nature of the church, kingdom (Eph 2:14-18; Col 3:15; Jn
14:27; 16:33).
b. The message of the church is the gospel of peace (Lk 2:10-14; Rom 10:15).
c. Both Isaiah and Zechariah describe the character of the kingdom—it will not
be extended or defended by weapons of war, its weapons are spiritual - 2 Cor
10:3,4; Eph 6:10-17 (Hailey).
d. Compare with Joel 3:10; Mic 4:3.
v. 5 the call to walk in the light of the Lord - they didn’t look anything like the Lord
filled with four sinful things
1)influences from the east
2)silver & gold
3)horses & chariots
4)idols

“As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, Whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, Shall I not do to Jerusalem and her images Just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”
Jeremiah 16:18 NASB95
“I will first doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable idols and with their abominations.”
Ezek. 5:11; 8:10; 16:36-37
Ezekiel 5:11 NASB95

So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of creeping things and beasts and detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around.
Ezekiel 16:36–37 NASB95
Thus says the Lord God, “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers and with all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your sons which you gave to idols, therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you loved and all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you from every direction and expose your nakedness to them that they may see all your nakedness.
Hosea 13:2 NASB95
And now they sin more and more, And make for themselves molten images, Idols skillfully made from their silver, All of them the work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves!”
Habakkuk 2:18–20 NASB95
“What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, Or an image, a teacher of falsehood? For its maker trusts in his own handiwork When he fashions speechless idols. “Woe to him who says to a piece of wood, ‘Awake!’ To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’ And that is your teacher? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, And there is no breath at all inside it. “But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”
“they worship the works of their hands” - what they accomplished what they did, what they achieved.
“terror of the Lord”
Hebrews 10:31 NASB95
It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
John 5:28–29 NASB95
“Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
“splendor of his majesty”
the proud and lofty will be abased and humbled & the Lord will be exalted
abased - lowered, disgraced, belittled
proud/ lofty/ lifted up = all that they achieved and had was due to their greatness it was God’s. When we believe we are in control of it all and we can turn the tide ourselves we have put ourselves in prideful lofty lifted up position too.
day of the Lord
Isaiah 13:6 NASB95
Wail, for the day of the Lord is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.
Amos 5:18–20 NASB95
Alas, you who are longing for the day of the Lord, For what purpose will the day of the Lord be to you? It will be darkness and not light; As when a man flees from a lion And a bear meets him, Or goes home, leans his hand against the wall And a snake bites him. Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light, Even gloom with no brightness in it?
Joel 1:15 NASB95
Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

v. 22 Key - stop regarding man
Quit trusting in idols:
a. God placed the breath of life in man’s nostrils (Gen 2:7; 7:22).
b. When man dies, it will be taken away from him (Psa 146:3-5).
c. Therefore, trust in God, quit trusting in men and their idols!
APPLICATION
The New American Commentary: Isaiah 1–39 1. Exaltation of God and Humbling of the Proud (2:1–4:6)

This sermon’s theological goal was to focus people’s attention on the necessity of exalting God and walking in his ways (2:5), rather than exalting themselves (2:22). Trusting in possessions, a social position, political power, or human accomplishments has never impressed God. He is looking for humble people who will boldly devote their lives to exalting the Lord alone (2:11, 17).

The New American Commentary: Isaiah 1–39 (2) Removal of Pride and Exaltation of God (2:6–22)

THEOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS. This sermon provides two unmistakable theological choices to any reader/listener. One can follow the path of proud leaders like Uzziah, or a person can “stop trusting in man” now and exalt God alone. The theological choice is clear and presented as two opposite alternatives with two opposite consequences: life with God in his glorious kingdom (2:1–5), or frightful humiliation and destruction (2:6–22). There is no middle ground for people to hide

The New American Commentary: Isaiah 1–39 (2) Removal of Pride and Exaltation of God (2:6–22)

When people trust in armies, money, people, or idols instead of God, the glorification of God on earth is diminished. God will not allow other things or people to be raised up above himself for long. If people become proud of their accomplishments and do not put their confidence in God, if they end up trusting their leaders more than God; God will eventually destroy everything they have depended on. There is nothing more important than exalting and glorifying God; there is nothing more devastating than glorifying yourself or putting something else higher than God.
