Psalm 95:6–9 NIV84
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did.
What is the very first word in this passage?
Come: Enter with a solemn heart? It is an invitation. Let us BOW DOWN.
Bow Down: low on one’s knees as a form of humility . It’s a directive.
Worship: WORTHSHIP. Hebrew word translates to ASCRIBE.
It is accepting our place and acknowledging His. An action of reverence.
Why? He is our Maker. Our God.
Who are we? The people of his pasture. The Flock under is care.
Psalm 23:2–3 NIV84
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Psalm 74:1 NIV84
Why have you rejected us forever, O God? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
John 10:11 NIV84
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Notice that next phrase: “TODAY, if you hear His voice...”
TODAY: Hebrews 3 quotes this verse. It gives a better descriptive understanding as to what to do TODAY:
Hebrews 3:13 NIV84
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
I asked a great theology teacher about this verse one day as to why TODAY was capitalized. He looked at me and said, “I have no idea.”
Well…the reason it is, it because TODAY is a holy moment. It is the indication that God is at work and we will hear His voice and His prompting TODAY. Not tomorrow, not yesterday, but we live for TODAY, in the Present in His Presence!
HEAR means to OBEY. It is not just listening.
1 Samuel 15:33 NIV84
But Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so will your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
What is the reference in verse 9 about when it is written, “do not harden your hearts?”
What are these places Meribah and Massah?
Meribah means quarreling.
Massah means testing.
Numbers 14:11 NIV84
The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them?
Exodus 17:7 NIV84
And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The people made the choice:
Psalm 78:18 NIV84
They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
Psalm 78:41 NIV84
Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.
What are your Meribah and Massah?
What makes you quarrel and test God?
Is it the same thing that you ancestors did?
Pride?
Arrogance?
Selfishness?
God says, “your Fathers tested and tried me, even though they had seen what I did.”
We have in this passage:
Posture
Pasture
Proof!
So how can we relate to this passage today, in the midst of unprecedented times, in the midst of “it ain’t never been like this before?”
