Ok so today
We believe that deliverance from sickness by Divine Healing is provided for in the Atonement.
What’s the atonement: It is the reconcilliation of God & Mankind through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
God’s original intention for Man was that the best of his creation would live in a perfect world having a close relationship with Him. But Adam and Eve spoiled it when they ate of the fruit and allowed sin to enter the world and death and deterioration was the result of this disobedience
Romans 5:12 ESV
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
& Mankind has been battling against God ever since, believing in Him, not believing in Him, loving Him, hating Him. Not giving Him glory for what He has done but giving Him all the blame for what He hasn’t.
God had a plan, He’s always had a plan, that plan has always been salvation for Mankind through the sacrifice of His Son, Salvation means rescue, rescue us from ourselves, from an eternity away from God.
God’s plan of salvation for us through the death of Jesus at Calvary not only meant provision being made for salvation but also for healing. Isaiah foretold of the suffering servant who would become a servant to mankind and suffer death, in order to bring mankind back into relationship with God.
Isaiah 53:4–5 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah pointed to a loving suffering servant whom God would provide as an atonement for sin. The verses indicate that the servant is neither Israel, the remnant nor the prophet Isaiah. The New Testament identifies him as Jesus.
1 Peter 2:21–25 ESV
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
James 5:13–16 ESV
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
All situations call for prayer of some kind, whether we are troubled, happy or sick. In sickness, the prayer of faith calls forth the divine work. Christians have non exemption from the natural laws of God’s universe. We do get sick. We do have a mission to heal the sick. James described the use of oil, a medical remedy in his day as well as a symbol of God’s powerful presence. Christians should pray for the sick and use all resources available to affect healing. Ultimately we must leave the healing to God. Faith in God should not be lost if the sick person is not healed. Prayer is never a device by which God can be manipulated into doing my will. Christians should accept God’s answer to prayer whatever it may be. What we do know is the great power prayer has in our ministry to the sick.
The early church accepted that healing of the body was part of there salvation and they instituted a special rite to cater for the sick where believers could receive special prayer.
James in his letter says is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
Faith is a vital ingredient in this passage and makes it clear that healing comes from supernatural means.
In verse 16 James makes a link between sin and sickness but Jesus has made it clear during his time of ministry that although sickness is a result of sin, it is not because of personal sin.
It’s not to do with hidden sin or lack of Faith, Healing has been paid for in the sacrifice that jesus made.
A question that comes up a lot is why some and not others. The purposes of God are way beyond us and only God has all the answers, he sees the whole picture our job is to trust in Him.
If being full of Faith i pray for your healing & you are not healed what has gone wrong, has something gone wrong, does it mean i lacked faith, does it mean you lacked Faith. No
We need to remember that God is sovereign, we do not know why this person is healed & that person isn’t. Maybe you can take it up with God when you get to Heaven just live in the now.
Jacob wrestles with God & pops his hip out of his socket & walks with a limp the rest of His days, something he had to live with.
He is our loving Father and only has good intentions toward us and while we receive physical and Spiritual healing through the work on the cross, it’s our Spirit that is reconciled to God for eternity not our bodies, our bodies are still subject to sin they are not imperishable but perishable and are subject to decay, sickness.
While God is still willing and able to heal today we don’t negate the natural resources i.e. doctors, medication, looking for that shortcut it’s not necessarily a given. That doesn’t stop us from praying for healing, expecting the miraculous with the right heart and attitude, ultimately surrendering to his will to be done.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
