Matthew 5:1-12

What was the purpose of the beatitudes?

Highlight our total depravity and point to our needs for a savior?
**Describe a challenging but practical way of life the Jesus expect of his followers.
This expectation also comes with a promise.

Blessed

Repeated nine times.
All shown to be the result of a certain life ethic,
Makarios - blessed, happy, fortunate
More than a circumstantial feeling of happiness.
Perpetual state of contentment found in a relationship with Christ.
For those who are a part of the Kingdom in the world.
Tragedy in our pursuit of happiness...
Seek temporary happiness from the world
Accept salvation but never seek happiness by living a life of a follower. (blessings are not automatic, they come with a life devoted and lived for Christ.)

Blessed are the poor in spirit.

Matthew 5:3 ESV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Listed 1st (seems important)
Describes: Recognize YOU NEED GOD’s help!
It is noble to desire to be a good person
It is humble to admit you cannot.
It is wise to admit you need God.
The promise here is rooted in eternity.

Blessed are those who mourn

Matthew 5:4 ESV
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Mourn - sad, grief
Requirement for being on who grieves if to be one who loves.
1st & 2nd most important commandment.
Mourning is a casualty of love
Jesus calls us to love
He know this world will bring mourning
Promise that we will be comforted.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

Matthew 5:6 ESV
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
When you are hungry or thirsty, it hard to think about anything else.
Gotta find food....Gotta find food...
This how you ought to desire righteousness.
Promise is that it will be worth it.
You will be satisfied.

Blessed are the peacemakers

Matthew 5:9 ESV
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Not for trouble makers
Those who love conflict.
Not for peace Desirers(???)
I want peace but they pushed my buttons!
I’ll seek peace until “this happens” (cross the line)
Peace MAKERS
Those who actively promote SHALOM
God’s messianic peace.
Among all parties involved.
Called the sons of God.

Peacemaking is truly kingdom work.

Jesus provided SHALOM between us and God
We are called to provide SHALOM in this world also. (pointing them to the cross)
This is not about being popular.
Matthew 5:10–12 ESV
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
persecuted - treated wrongly because of your faith.
(2nd) promise is the kingdom of heaven
People revile you - mock you
