Frank Bartleman and hunger for His presence and the Pentecostal revival
Fark Bartleman was one the pioneers to the Azuza Street Revival in 1906. He was so hungry for God and His presence and revival that he lost his appetite for food, quit his job, hardly slept and had so abandoned himself to prayer that his wife and friends began to fear for his life. He missed so much sleep and so many meals in order to pray that his family did not think he could last much longer. His response to their pleas for moderation was that he would rather die than not see revival.
The Azusa Street Revival sparked one of the greatest spiritual awakenings of the 20th century. From that revival there are 584 million Pentecostal and Charismatics today. 25 percent of the overall Christian church – You know what denomination holds the largest number of Pentecostal and Charismatics. It the Catholic Church with 160 Million.
Seeking God: Sometimes we do not know how to seek God in the moment. Is here serving bread or is He serving wine. When God is serving wine its time to drink. When he is serving bread its time to eat.
Relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Hunger in the kingdom of God comes from feeding on God’s word vs hunger in the natural comes from with staining from eating. Hunger comes by feeding on the word. The more dig into the word of God the more I want of Him.
Lets talk about the Holy Spirit and the anointing. About Drinking
3 Anointing definition also the word Christ -Chrio (to anoint) Christos (Christ, Messiah, Anointed one) Chrisma (anointing) Christianos (Christian)
Chrio = to rub or smear with oil– (to anoint) my head with oil.
The word “anointed” comes from the Greek word chrio, which means to rub, to bathe, and, in certain contexts, to massage. This word depicted the application of various substances, such as oil, medicine, and water. In most cases, however, the word chrio was used to depict the anointing of oil. In the Old and New Testament, the word “anoint” is primarily used to depict a person who is anointed by God with the Holy Spirit.
Christos = smeared on – (Christ, messiah, anointed one)
Chrisma = what is rubbed on – gifts
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.
Intro: This song is talking about the relationship of shepherd and sheep. A shepherd would anoint the sheep’s head to protect it from flies and other pests.
Body: Problem Summer time the sheep are troubled by the nose fly. These little flies buzz about the sheep’s head attempting to deposit their eggs on the damp, mucous membranes of the sheep’s nose. If they successful the eggs will hatch in a few days to form small, slender, worm like larvae. They work their way up the nasal passages into the sheep’s head. They burrow into the flesh and there set up an intense irritation accompanied by severe inflammation.
For relief from this agonizing annoyance sheep will deliberately beat their heads against trees, rocks, posts, or brush. In extreme cases of intense infestation a sheep may even kill itself to find relief.
Because of this, when the nose flies hover around the flock some of the sheep become frantic with fear and panic in their attempt to escape their tormentors. They will stamp their feet erratically and race from place to place in the pasture trying desperately to elude the flies. Some may run so much they will drop from sheer exhaustion. Others may toss their heads up and down for hours. They will hide in any bush or woodland area that offers shelter. On some occasions they may refuse to graze in the open at all.
Ointment: Answer Shepherds in response to this will apply and smear ointment all over their head and nose through out summer time. Once this ointment is applied there is an immediate change in behavior. Gone is the aggravation, gone in the frenzy, irritability, restlessness, fear, and anxiety. The sheep would begin to feed again and lie down in peaceful contentment.
Personal: How many has had those little flies buzzing around your head. Flies of aggravation, restlessness, fear and anxiety? Little flies that rob you of your peace and joy.
Answer: Just as with the sheep there must be continuous and renewed application of oil to forestall the flies in my life, there must be a continuous anointing of God’s Spirit to counteract the ever present frustrations and anxiety.
25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
17 Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’ ”
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,
38 “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
