Introduction

Greetings…
In John chapter 8 starting in verse 31 we find Jesus talking with “many Jews who had recently just believed him” (John 8:30).
Jesus informs them how to be “set free from sin” by way of truth in verses 31-38.
They didn’t like this because they were mistakenly thinking they were not “slaves of anyone” because they were “Abraham’s offspring.”
Jesus ends up declaring that the reason they couldn’t except they were “slaves of sin” was because “his (Jesus’) word found no place in them” (37).
They were listening to “their earthly fathers” instead of Jesus’ “divine Father.”
It here we find Jesus tell them why these newly believing Jews in Jesus were now so quickly turning their backs on him.
Because they had bought into Satan’s lies.
John 8:44–45 ESV
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
John 8:46–47 ESV
46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
Like these Jews many today, both in and out of the church, have bought into the lies Satan has told.
Today we are going to examine three lies Satan told Eve and the truth behind them.
So with that in mind lets examine our lesson for today.

Lie One

God Is A Restrictive God.

Satan wants us to believe God is restrictive and doesn’t want us to do anything.
Genesis 3:1–5 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
This idea that God is restrictive and doesn’t want us to do anything or be happy is ludicrous.
John 16:24 ESV
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
Psalm 34:8 ESV
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Romans 15:13 ESV
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Summary

Far too many have believed Satan that our Creator, our Father, our Savior is restrictive.
We can neither believe this lie nor live in any way that would perpetuate this lie to others.
What about…

Lie Two

There Are No Consequences.

Satan flat our lies saying we “won’t get in trouble” for sin.
Eat, drink, and be merry…do whatever you want there are no consequences.
Genesis 3:4 ESV
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
Once again this lie couldn’t be any further from the truth.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Psalm 62:12 ESV
12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

Summary

If Covid-19 has taught us anything its that far too many children of God are more scared of an earthly virus than fear their creator.
How many congregations are still having to beg their members to come back and worship but they don’t and won’t because they believe there will be no consequences for unnecessarily neglecting the assembly.
Let us never buy into Satan’s lie that there are no consequences for sin.
Lastly Satan’s…

Lie Three

You Can Be God.

Satan desperately wants us, the creation, to believe we can be God.
Why, because if we are “a god unto ourselves” and thus a god we don’t need the God of the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 3:5 ESV
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The truth of the matter is many people like to “play god” when decisions need to be made concerning “their life.”
They reason it’s “their life” they can do whatever they want they are in charge of themselves and then they turn right around when things go bad and want “blessings to rain down on them” from the God.
They’ve bought into the lie that they can be their own god and don’t need God “most of the time.”
Again, there is no iota of truth to this, it is completely a lie.
We are the creation not the Creator.
Proverbs 16:2 ESV
2 All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit.
Proverbs 14:12 ESV
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Proverbs 12:15 ESV
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Summary

Don’t let Satan full us, there is only one God and it isn’t us.
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

Conclusion

Satan wants us to believe we our God is a restrictive God, who doesn’t care if we sin or not, and that therefore we can be our own God.
You and I know this isn’t the case but outside those doors so many do believe these very things, let’s make certain we are helping those around us know the love of God and truth rather than Satan’s lies.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
