Welcome to Bible Study for the first week of September..

Last week we began a Bible Study about

Studying the Bible...

You might remember this song...

The B.I.B.L.E.. Yes that’s the book for me, I stand alone on the word of God, the B.I.B.L.E

This week I want to examine some details about how we study the Bible…and how different kinds of studies speak to different aspects of our personality.

We humans…are complex.

We are...

Made in the Image of God,

We are fallen.

We have great gifts

and

seemingly insurmountable liabilities.

Our basic makeup consists of three elements.

Will

Intellect

Emotion.

Different ways of studying the Bible speak to different parts of the human personality.

We read the Bible for Inspiration.

Psalm 119:105 ESV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Spiritual

Emotional

Devotional

Speaks to our “Affections.”

Love, Fear, Respect, Humility, Awe

We read the Bible for Information.

Hebrews 4:12–13 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Intellectual

Understanding, order, structures

We read the Bible for Indoctrination.

Matthew 7:24 ESV
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Acts 8:35 ESV
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:13 ESV
13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Indoctrination

speaks to our WILL

challenges and changes our intentions

structures our understanding.

The Bible speaks...

To our head

To our heart

To our will

To stand on the Bible is to let it

Speak to every part of your life...

So that God can use it to form your character in Christ.
