Herein Jesus makes five claims to equality with God:
(1) He is equal with God in His person
John 5:17–18 KJV 1900
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
(2) He is equal with God in His works
John 5:19–20 KJV 1900
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
(3) He is equal with God in His power and sovereignty
John 5:21 KJV 1900
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
(4) He is equal with God in His judgment
John 5:22 KJV 1900
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
(5) He is equal with God in His honor
John 5:23 KJV 1900
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
Sabellianism (oneness that says Jesus is the Father
Arianism that denies the fact that Jesus is God (Jehovah’s witnesses)
The Son can do nothing but what He sees the Father do.
That is the same for us. We can only do what we see. We must have a vital and vivid vision of what God wants to accomplish in us and through us.
Verse 25 They that hear shall live
Verse 19 what you see the Father do....25 what you hear....
Verses 24-29 The Resurrection
John 5:24 KJV 1900
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
John 5:25–41 KJV 1900
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men.
The dead shall hear the voice…they shall live
Father hath life, the Son hath life, the believer should have life!
Life comes as a result of obedience (V 25 They that hear shall live....)
Resurrection, eternal life, will be for both those that obey and those that don’t (v 29) but the destinations will be vastly different.
Resurrection of life, and resurrection of damnation.
I seek (v30) not my own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me
Jesus can’t bear witness of Himself (V
The Father bore witness of Jesus
John’s witness Verse 33-36
His Works witness that He is the Son of God
Their lack:
Have not His Word abiding in you
Have not his Life
Have not His Love
What Do We Love?
But we all … are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:18)
God wants us to recognize that human nature is in a formative state and that it is being changed into the image of the thing it loves.
Men and women are being molded by their affinities, shaped by their affections and powerfully transformed by the artistry of their loves. In the unregenerate world of Adam this produces day by day tragedies of cosmic proportions!
For His own children, our heavenly Father has provided right moral objects for admiration and love. They are not God but they are nearest to God; we cannot love Him without loving them.
I speak of His righteousness; and the heart drawn to righteousness will be repulsed in the same degree by iniquity. I speak of wisdom, and we admire the Hebrew prophets, who refused to divorce wisdom from righteousness.
I speak also of truth as another object of our Christian love. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I am the truth” and in so saying He joined truth to the Deity in inseparable union. Thus, to love God is to love the truth![1]
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. [2]
14 Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does.[3]
Many believers in our day seem to consider the expression of true Christian holiness to be just a matter of personal option: “I have looked it over and considered it, but I don’t buy it!”
But the Apostle Peter clearly exhorts every Christian to holiness of life and conversation: God’s children ought to be holy because God Himself is holy! I am of the opinion that New Testament Christians do not have the privilege of ignoring such apostolic injunctions.
There is something basically wrong with our Christianity and our spirituality if we can carelessly presume that if we do not like a biblical doctrine and choose to ignore it, there is no harm done. God has never instructed us that we should weigh His desires for us and His commandments to us in the balance of our own judgments—and then decide what we want to do about them.
We have the power within us to reject God’s instruction—but where else shall we go? If we turn away from the authority of God’s Word, to whose authority do we yield?
