First Peter 1:1-2
Lesson #1
Ken Runyon – LPCC
Peter’s opening words are few but extremely powerful! Depending on your
translation; there are only 59 words. He teaches a lifetime of truth and theology in
these words.
Let’s review some highlights of his life…
First - He was the __________________ and the spokesman of the twelve, his
name leads all four New Testament lists of the apostles (Matthew 10:2ff; Mark
3:16ff; Luke 6:13ff; Acts 1:13ff).
Second - Peter and his brother Andrew ran a _______________________ on the
Sea of Galilee (Matthew 4:18).
Third – Apparently, the business was successful because they had a house in
Capernaum that was _______________________ for Jesus to do ministry there.
You will also notice in the text we read that Peter was married: Mark 1:29-33.
Fourth - His ___________ joined him on his missionary travels: 1 Corinthians 9:5.
Fifth – Peter was part of Jesus’ _________________ (Matthew 17:1; Mark 5:37;
Mark 14:33).
Sixth – There is no direct evidence that Peter was present at the crucifixion.
Seventh – Jesus _________________ Peter’s role in the Kingdom of God after his
denial of Jesus three times (John 21:15-17).
Eighth – Peter took the lead in replacing _______________ with another apostle
(Acts 1:15-26).
All through the Gospels, Peter has an extremely aggressive, dominant personality.
He is passionate. He is Type A. He acts first and thinks later. He speaks first and
thinks later. When the Holy Spirit comes upon the Apostles in Acts 2, all of that
personality seems to be amped up. As a leader among the other apostles, and in
the early church, Peter lives up to his name. He is solid as a rock (pun intended).
Ninth – Peter preached the first Gospel sermon that ushered in the birthday of the
church (Acts 2:14-16).
Tenth – Peter continued to be a _________________ of the Gospel (Acts 3:12-26).
Eleventh – Peter was willing to confront the extremely intimidating
_______________________ (Acts 4:8-12).
Twelfth – Peter was willing to confront intentionally sinful _______________ (Acts
5:1-6).
Thirteenth – He was a powerful preacher and a powerful __________________
(Acts 5:12-16).
Fourteenth – It was through Peter’s ministry that the doors of the church were
thrown open to the __________________ (Acts 10:34-35, 44-48).
Fifteenth – After his appearance at the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15:7-12), Peter
essentially _______________ from the historical record of the New Testament until
he wrote his two letters.
Sixteenth – It is generally accepted that Peter was _________________ sometime
between AD65 and AD68.
• The reign of Nero was from AD54 to AD68 (13 years).
• Peter wrote First Peter sometime between AD 60 and AD65.
• Peter wrote Second Peter sometime between AD65 and AD68.
• Most likely, his death came very shortly after writing his second letter.
The great fire of Rome occurred in AD64. The fire burned for a total of nine days
and destroyed two-thirds of the city. Nero blamed the Christians and persecution
exploded. Most likely, Peter’s death was a result of this.
