Summary of v1-25
Famine is severe and Jacob commands his sons to go to Egypt and buy food.
Judah reminds his father that the man they purchase from in Egypt will not see them unless their brother is with them.
Had Jacob not forbidden this, they would have already returned to purchase food twice.
Jacob’s reaction is to finally consent and send his sons with gifts and a prayer for mercy from God
In the past weeks I’ve been challenging you to share your faith with someone you know needs to hear the word of hope. Our understanding this morning: Great hospitality is the start of great evangelism
Genesis 43:26–34 ESV
26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground. 27 And he inquired about their welfare and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” 28 They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. 29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!” 30 Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there. 31 Then he washed his face and came out. And controlling himself he said, “Serve the food.” 32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement. 34 Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.
Here we see Joseph’s love for his brothers on display.
He provides for them
He spends time over them
He weeps/cries over them
Showing love toward believers
Romans 12:9–13 ESV
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
v9 - What does sincere love look like? Evil - harm, Good - kindness
v10-11 -
Love with brotherly affection
Outdo one another in showing honor (To be respected/honored, you must first show respect/honor)
Serve the Lord zealously.
v12 - Trust God in all things (A culture of trusting God makes the church prosper)
v13 -
Contribute to the needs of the saints.
Give to the church and be a provider in the community of the church.
Transition - seek to show hospitality, both inside the church and outside. Great hospitality is the start of great evangelism.
Galatians 6:9–10 ESV
9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Showing love toward nonbelievers
Romans 12:14–21 ESV
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
v14 - We’re not just talking about the nonbelievers that are friendly, but even those who hate the church.
v15 - Involvement. You can never be as intimate with a nonbeliever as you are with a believer, no common foundation. How involved are we? Rejoice & Weep
v16-18 -
Harmonious living
Walk in humility, never look to yourself as an ultimate authority
Repay no evil
Do what is honorable in the sight of all (So that all see honor, not that all agree it is honorable)
Live peaceably with all
v19-21
Great hospitality is the start of great evangelism
