Well, good morning church.
So good to have you out.
I guess I already said good morning .
Thanks for being here.
We're going to be in the The Book of John John chapter 20 were just a couple shot chapters.
Shy of finishing the Gospel of John.
John chapter 20.
And the 20 chapter John is the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
And so this is the passage of scripture that is preached every Easter right?
And so my I challenge week was to preach a passage that is well-known and often preached then it's it's a historical narrative right?
It's John explaining to us what He saw occur after Christ's crucifixion on the cross.
And so we're just going to let John tell the story this morning.
We're going to read through the entire chapter of John 20, and we're just going to allow John to give an explanation of what he has his account of what happened the moon.
There's just a few things at the end that I think that we can take away from what John has done here in John chapter 20 bringing Everything full circle bring it into the complete package of the Gospel presentation that John has given us from beginning and John chapter 1 all the way through the end of the book, so he's in his concluding thoughts.
And he's demonstrating to us Jesus bodily Resurrection from the grave which is of utmost importance.
Right?
There's many people have claimed to be some Messiah figure who say that they were Jesus or the their God and that by following them that so you could have eternal life and there's many people who claim to be God leader in this world and their bones are still in the grave.
There's only one.
The Lord Jesus Christ who went to the Cross paid the penalty.
For our sin, not for his but for ours got wrath was poured upon him.
And if it's only been Jesus who is has risen from the grave who three days later Rose over death.
Provided victory over death.
Buy vincristine death and sin and the consequences of sin.
He demonstrated his his his vicarious work on the crosses substitutionary atonement was completely satisfactory to the father for sin.
And then him rising from the grave; all those who believe and receive Jesus as their savior have the promise of the new life that is to come the glorified state where you and I will rise from the grave in a glorified body and have an eternal presence in that live in an external place with our God.
For God will be amongst his people.
And we will be with our God.
All because of what Jesus has done in the proof of Jesus sacrificial work being satisfactory to the father to our God is because the fact that he rose from the grave at such an important doctrine that he not only didn't just rise in the spiritual sense that he bodily Rose from the grave and we'll see that this morning.
So if you have your Bibles with you John chapter, 20 will begin the first one and will let John tell us what he's described here.
Or what he saw him on the first day of the week of Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early while it was still dark and she saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
And so she went to Simon Peter into the other disciples of the disciple.
The one Jesus loved, you know, that's John right.
He often always refers to himself as the one that Jesus loved but a great way to explain yourself.
What's your name?
I'm the one that Jesus loved loved so much he died for me.
The ones you just live instead of them and they've taken the Lord out of the Tomb and we don't know where they put him.
And that I thought Peter and the other disciples went out heading for the tomb.
So Mary automatically believes that it's somebody's up to something that the Jewish leaders of the Roman leaders.
Somehow snatched Jesus's body and took it away so that his body couldn't be, you know put on display or they knew you know that he was had many followers.
And so Mary automatically assume the worst and we had the benefit of hindsight of knowing that Jesus rose from the grave.
And Mary, I mean we can understand where she's coming from, right?
Who would expect someone that you love me and I followed to die and then rise from the grave 3 days later.
That's exactly what happened with Mary you're at that Peter and the other disciples.
We're not heading for the tomb.
He hasn't the two were running together.
So they're like, oh my goodness, so they're running to the tomb but the other disciple outran Peter.
So John trying to be humble here.
I was trying to say I'm faster than Peter.
IB Peter to the Grave and they got to the tomb first verse 5 stooping down.
He saw the linen clothes lying there, but he did not go in for John stayed outside of a tomb.
Men following him Simon Peter also came and he entered the tomb and saw the linen cloth lying there.
The wrapping that had been on his head was not laying with the lemon clocks, but was folded up in a separate place by itself.
And so we with the benefit of hindsight realize and understand that Jesus when he rose from the grave when he rose up begin to take off these burial cloth is Lenin cloth.
He was very meticulous about how you laid them and he folded the straw that look upon his face and and made it to the point where the computer had to stop and wonder what is going on here.
Why is his class limit by still there, and then in rap and folded in such a manner and the others disciples and believe and so Obviously John's trying to explain to us he's also has a little bit of trepidation.
He's like, he sees women classy he's turned in the grave and he doesn't know if the bodies there or not eat seeds and then Peter runs in there.
And so he follows and says, oh wow, you really is body truly is gone.
Respond play did not yet understand the scripture that he had must rise from the dead.
Johns telling what's going on in their hearts, they they didn't understand that.
They're they're trying to make sense of this in and they're not thinking about the fact that Jesus how many times have we seen in John where Jesus told his disciples?
Look I'm going to have to go to the cross and die, but I will come back to you.
I will return to you.
And how many times you saw that they just didn't quite get it and I believe John's even pointed further back to the Old Testament to the to the prophecies in the Old Testament and Isaiah and Ezekiel that the that Messiah figure would be cut off would need to be cut off with a need to die.
And we know that the Jewish history in the Jewish history that the rabbis would debate back and forth whether or not that the Messiah was actually one person that there was two Messiah figures because they looked at the Old Testament and they saw that this Messiah was on one hand suffering servant sin and would suffer and then on the other hand they saw a figure is a Victorious Victor and King.
And they said well, maybe it's just that there's two there's a precursor Messiah then they would go back and forth or we have the benefit of knowing that it is.
the Lord Jesus Christ to has to advance he's come here in Scripture.
As a baby born of the Holy Spirit raise them to the law for filled a lot to its fullest.
Without sin 100% man 1% God he stepped into his creation so that they become a human so that he could take the sacrifice on our account.
And he was without sin like this in that were born with him.
He could go until fill that requirement of the Spotless sacrifice that God.
desired demanded
Not Stewart, Jesus was that's what he's done for us in the gospel.
He he went he he fulfilled the law.
He he live this life.
He went to the cross and they need died and play vicarious substitution.
Turn on the heat tucks up Wrath of sin upon himself arson.
For all those who would believe he took that payment for you.
And that's his first Advent.
He rose from the grave 4 days later.
He ascended to the right hand of the father.
What scripture declares that he's coming back again?
He's not coming back as a suffering servant any longer.
He's coming back as the Victorious King.
Or he will render judgment.
For all that evil all the sin that has been poured out in this world has been corrupted by the saying all those things will stand under his judgment.
And so we have the benefit of seen in the height of hindsight's was seen Jesus fulfilling both the suffering servant and the Conquering came as the Messiah figure.
Richmond today they did not yet understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead Isaiah 53 talking about him having to write some of that sooner disciples return to the place where they were staying so most likely the upper room there in verse 10 But Mary stood outside the tomb crying.
And that she was crying.
She stopped to look into the tomb.
She saw two angels and white sitting where Jesus's body have been lying.
One at the head and the other at the feet.
And they said to her woman.
Why are you crying?
