What is a Creed and Why is it Important?

Romans 10:8–10 ESV
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
As you’re getting ready for school in the morning, what’s a question your parents ask you?
One of our big questions is always, what do you want for breakfast?
when someone asks what you want to eat for a meal or a snack
what’s more helpful: telling what you want, or listing all the the things you don’t want?
and when you say what you do want, is it better to be very general, or specific?
so it’s important to be specific, not just about what you don’t want, but about what you do want
so answering our question of what is a creed?
the word creed means belief
so a creed is a summary of what someone believes
and when we go to something like the Apostles Creed, we’re talking about a short summary of what people who believe in Jesus believe
in our passage Paul talks about the importance of confessing who Jesus is and what we believe about him
we believe that Jesus is Lord and that he lives, that he was raised from the dead
and what the apostles creed does is build on that, because if we say Jesus is Lord, we also need to answer
Who is Jesus?
A creed helps to summarize the core of what we believe about God
So why is it important?
When people want to know what a Christian is, what we believe, we don’t give them a list of things we’re not
no, not that, not that, not that
we can give them a specific list of what defines us, which are beliefs not about us, but about God, about who Jesus is
