INTRODUCTION:
1. Today we are going to examine three important words from 1 Corinthians 10:13.
A. Common
B. But
C. Able
2. As we examine this verse I want you to think about a title for the sermon.
A. At the conclusion I will give you the title that I gave it while writing the lesson.
1. The reason for this exercise is to see and understand all the different lessons that this singular verse could generate.
2. From this we can see how beneficial the church is to all the individual members as we learn different things from the same verse and share them together through study.
3. I bet that each and every individual in services today could add something to the lesson from this verse that I did not think of showing the importance of the Church.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
BODY:
1. Common
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
A. Every temptation that man faces is something that every person alive will faces.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
1. There is nothing that Satan can do to tempt us in a manner that is different than these three ways.
B. If he could have he would have tempted Jesus with it but not even Jesus was tempted with a temptation other that one of these three.
1. Jesus was tempted to turn stones to bread (Matt. 4:3)—the lust of the flesh.
2. Jesus was tempted to throw himself off the pinnacle of the temple if He truly believe He was the Son of God (Matt. 4:5-6)—the pride of life.
3. Jesus was tempted fall down and worship Satan after being showed all the kingdoms of the world and their glory (Matt. 4:8-9)—the lust of the eyes.
C. Man may have allot of excuses for giving in to temptation but there is nothing new under the sun.
9 That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us.
A. Man cannot say the devil made me do it which leads me to my next point.
2. But
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
A. But is a word of contrast, contrasting God’s faithfulness to that of temptation.
1. Satan is the temper in contrast to God.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
A. Satan is the temper but God cannot be tempted nor does He tempt anyone.
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
2. Satan is the father of lies in contrast to God.
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
A. Satan is the father of lies but God cannot lie.
17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
B. God is the contrast of everything Satan is...
1. Satan is darkness.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
2. God is light.
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
3. Satan is the prince of this world.
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4. God’s Kingdom is not of this world.
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
C. The tempter will do everything in His power to tempt you to sin, but God will do everything in his power to protect you from sin.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
1. The devil seeks to attack the Christian.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
2. But God seeks to protect us from the devil’s wiles.
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
A. God has limited how the devil can tempt us today much the same as he limited the devil during the life of Job.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” 9 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
3. Able
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
A. With every temptation God has provided a way of escape which makes us able.
1. That way of escape from every temptation is “It is written”.
A. The tempter tempted Jesus to turn Stones to bread.
1. Jesus escaped the temptation with “It is written”.
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
B. The tempter tempted Jesus to throw himself down off the temple.
1. Jesus escaped the temptation with “It is written”.
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
C. The tempter tempted Jesus to bow down and worship him.
1. Jesus escaped the temptation with “It is written”.
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
2. That way of escape from every temptation is “God has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness”.
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
A. God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through knowledge of Him.
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
1. This knowledge of Him comes through study of His word which makes us able to escape temptation.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
3. With study we become able to escape temptation and become approved of by God.
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
CONCLUSION:
1. All temptation is common to man.
2. But God is faithful.
3. Which makes us able to avoid temptation.
4. The name of the sermon is...
A. God’s Faithfulness Demands Our Faithfulness.
