Setting The Scene
Setting The Scene
for the last few weeks Jesus has been in Ephraim
11 54-57
Jesus has a APB on Him
Its now 6 days before His death
1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
most of the rest of John is these last 6 days before the Crucifixion
Jesus has returned to Lazarus home
and a neighbor Simon had a BBq in His honor
3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
Simon was cured of lepercy, Lazarus was brought back from the dead
9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Martha served,Serving, or working for Christ
she is joyfully serving Her Lord
there is no complaint or frustration
Service is very important to the King
Jesus came to serve, demonstrated by washing the feet
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
serving the Lord is a high form of worship
19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
we are to serve each other
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
Lazarus speaks of our witness
People come from far and near to see the man raised from the dead
just being alive is a witness to Jesus power
Turn to Ephesians 2 1-10
Mary used her ointment to display her love
3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Spike nard - pure , years wages for a common man
alabaster flask , break neck to access
used for medicinal purpose
putting on dead body for burial
perfume
Imported by camel from India, and china
Essential oil
she poured it all on Jesus head and feet
3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
let down her hair and wiped His feet with it
something not done - only alone with her husband
maybe at that time she only saw her Husband to be
her being the bride of Christ
the other people in the room she did not acknowledge
she had eyes only for Jesus
the nard was not used on her dead brother, as much as she loved him
Turn to Revelation 2 1-6
Our worship is to love Jesus above all, above everything we have,
Besides everything we own belongs to God
and will be destroyed
Judas’ in the Church
Judas’ in the Church
4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,
Judas the follower but non believer
Judas, who follows for his own greedy gain
trusted with the money bag
in the church there are tares that look real, but are impostors
they believe in as far as what they can get out of the experience
Judas was a thief, and stole from the bag
5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
the only poor person he was thinking of was himself
6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Turn to Matt 7:15-27
What is the fruit of a good tree
be a witness of the Lord-- your life reflects the light
serve the Lord
love the Lord extravagantly
be a student of the Lord
want to be around the Family
you know your heart, what is the reason you pretend to be a christian
Does The Bible Back Up Your Beliefs?
Does The Bible Back Up Your Beliefs?
Mary knew about the death of Jesus
7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
the spikenard was for Jesus burial
why did Mary know this and not the disciples?
9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. 32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: 34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.
over and over the men were told of Jesus dying but it did not fit in to their theology
Jesus was the Messiah, the King, the ruler of the world
certainly not die
so it was dismissed as something unimportant
Do we do the same thing?
reading the Bible we come across something that does not fit snugly into our beliefs
what do we do with it? skip over? disregard?
we need to stop and ask questions
and dig
maybe this question is concerning your eternity
are you saved? or did you say a prayer at one time or another
to get fire insurance against hell
does your life display the fruit of salvation?
9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
The life of Mary demonstrated the fruit of salvation
what fruit is your life displaying?
