Scripture Reading: St. Mark 10:17 - 21

Text Verse: St. Mark 10:17: . . . Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? [1]

Do You Really Want to Know?

Introduction: In the text some people were gathered around Jesus as people will often do.  Jesus will do one of two things He will draw you (to Himself) or drive you (away from Him).  Can I get a witness? Who was there? The Pharisee (St. Luke 17:20), self righteous folk, sinners, Sadducees, children, disciples, sinners were there and someone who raised a question for us all.  There was a rich young lawyer who had kept the ten commandments (so he said), probably had everything material possession that money could buy, education, prestige and status in the community.  He came to Jesus, and asked Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life (life without intermission).

used as an interrogative expressing inquiry about the identity, nature, or value of an object or matter 〈what is this〉 〈what is wealth without friends〉 〈what does he earn〉 〈what hath God wrought〉 [2]

And they said, Moses allowed to write a bill of divorce, and to put away. 5 And Jesus answering said to them, In view of your hard-heartedness he wrote this commandment for you; 6 but from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united to his wife, 8 and the two shall be one flesh: so that they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. 10 And again in the house the disciples asked him concerning this. 11 And he says to them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and shall marry another, commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman put away her husband and shall marry another, she commits adultery.

13 And they brought little children to him that he might touch them. But the disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But Jesus seeing it, was indignant, and said to them, Suffer the little children to come to me; forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no wise enter into it. 16 And having taken them in his arms, having laid his hands on them, he blessed them.

17 And as he went forth into the way, a person ran up to him, and kneeling to him asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 But Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? no one is good but one, that is God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answering said to him, Teacher, all these things have I kept from my youth. 21
