The Value of Spit

From being spit on to being sent.

John 9:1–7 NASB95

1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” 6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.

Spit:

Made clay of the saliva.

We want to find out what or who was wrong.

Jesus wants to point us to Father, healing, restoration.

I see Four keys Jesus gave in this story.

Key #1 Honor:

Jesus said it is neither this man or his parents.

What if we just exchanged the question:

- Who is at fault?

(for)

- How are the works of God going to be displayed in this?

Jesus honored:

- blind man,

- the parents

- God

- who God sent Him to be.

Key #2 Trust:

The blind man walked through trusting Jesus a stranger to him.

The Jews were taught to confirm what God was punishing.

They were taught to spit on people who were in sin.

Jesus was walking the blind man through trust.

It is likely that he heard Jesus say what he did about his parents and him not sinning, and that God was going to do some sort of work and that He was the light.

Trust will require some action or steps of faith.

Key #3 Healing

Actions of obedience produce healing.

Actions of relationship, connection, trust, faith produce healing.

Go Wash in the pool

Many times Jesus asking for some sort of leap of faith for healing.

Forgiveness

Pick up your bead and walk

Go your faith has made you well

Reach out and touch Jesus cloths

Show the priests

Come forth.

Jesus redeemed a sound of torture to become a sound of healing.

Every time that man hears someone spitting he is now reminded of His healing.

Jesus redeems what brought death to bring life.

Jesus is a redeemer, He takes what was death and brings life with that very thing.

Jesus takes the place of torture in our lives and redeems them to be a place of testimony and healing.

Key #4 Sending

Honor, trust, healing and then your sent.

The pool the blind man washed in is called sent.

The blind man was sent but still many rejected him because they were rejecting Jesus.

The Pharisees had their answers and to their torture and it was not Jesus.

Closing:

This is all a process before He sends you.

There are 4 keys Jesus gives us to go from being spit on to being sent.

Those 4 keys are: Honor, Trust, Healing, and Sending.

Jesus wants to redeem a place of torture to become a place of healing.

What if we just exchanged the question:

Who is at fault? (for) How are the works of God going to be displayed in this?

What is the spit in your life?

How is Jesus is redeeming or building trust in your life?

Challenge:

Look for the Keys Jesus is giving you: Honor, Trust, Healing, and Sending.
