Introduction

Colossians 2:13–15 KJV 1900
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Colossians 3:1–14 KJV 1900
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

What Christ has Accomplished on our Behalf

Quickened

We were once:
Dead
Apart from God
Without any hope
Ephesians 2:12 KJV 1900
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
We are are now — quickened
Ephesians 2:1–9 KJV 1900
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Forgiven

“having forgiven you all trespasses”
forgiven = to bestow favor unconditionally, to show oneself gracious by forgiving wrongdoing, forgive, pardon
All = all, every, each, any, ALL
Jesus Christ Has Purchased what God Had Promised!
Isaiah 1:18 KJV 1900
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Jeremiah 31:31 KJV 1900
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
The Jews Recognized It, but Rejected It
Luke 5:20–25 KJV 1900
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

Innocent

"Blotting Out” — wiped away, removing from the written record, wiping the slate clean
Handwriting” — certificate of indebtedness, account, record of debts
The Written Debt was Doubly Damning — not just against us, but contrary (opposed, hostile) to us
“Took it out of the Way” — Jesus removed our debt and out guilt once and for all
John 1:29 KJV 1900
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
The debt is paid, permanently removed, and can never be presented again!
“Nailing it to his cross” — Our sin, our debt, our guilt, Jesus took it all upon Himself and it was nailed with Him to His cross
1 Peter 2:24 KJV 1900
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Galatians 3:13 KJV 1900
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Hebrews 9:27–28 KJV 1900
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Victorious

“Triumphing Over them In It”
Jesus conquered our enemies for us!
John 19:30 KJV 1900
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
tetelestai = a cry of victory in the hour of defeat, like nenikena
John 16:33 KJV 1900
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
When Jesus spoke His last words on the cross, he cried out, not in defeat, but in triumph — having accomplished the task He had set out to do, and having won the victory over sin once and for all.
ILLUSTRATION — When the Persian fleet and army threatened the Greek peninsula in 490 BC, the leaders in Athens knew that they had to rally their forces to meet this threat. There seemed to be no hope, for the Persians vastly outnumbered the Greeks. Therefore, the elders of Athens decided to send an entreaty to the king of Sparta, a traditional enemy, to ask for help.
They sent a man named Philippides (sometimes spelled Pheidippides) as their emissary. He was a professional herald and long-distance runner. Legend has it that Philippides ran to Sparta and back to Athens in four days, a nearly 300-mile round trip. He returned with the news that the Spartans could not help. The Athenians had no time to wait, so they marched their forces to the plains of Marathon. There they ambushed the invaders and won a great victory over the numerically superior Persian army.
After this triumph at Marathon, Philippides was again called on. This time he ran 26 miles back to Athens to announce the victory to his defenseless and terrified city. Legend has it that he arrived at the city gates with only enough life left to utter “Rejoice, we conquer!” before falling dead. His death was tragic, but his dramatic message was truly good news for the unprotected city.
The victory the Christ has won for us is even better news!

(What Christ has Accomplished on our Behalf)

Is What Changes our Attitude and Behavior

Colossians 3:1–3 KJV 1900
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Seeking

If = since, because
Seek those things which are above
What do you spend most of your time seeking? Things below, or things above?

Setting

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Our pursuits should be above because our passion is above.
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 KJV 1900
For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

Slaying

The Old Man is dead, but our Old Mannerisms still need killing.
Colossians 3:5 KJV 1900
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
The behaviors that need killing are:
fornication — sexual sins
uncleanness — moral impurity
inordinate affection — lustfulness
evil concupiscence — evil desires or cravings
covetousness — materialism

Suiting Up

Putting Off
Colossians 3:8–10 KJV 1900
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
anger — violent passion
wrath — indignation, intense anger, rage
malice — depravity, wickedness
blasphemy — speech against God
filthy communication — lewd, indecent, and immodest discourse
lying (9)
Putting On
Colossians 3:12–14 KJV 1900
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
bowels of mercies — tenderness and mercy
kindness — gentleness, goodness
humbleness of mind — humility in your mind
meekness — gentle humility toward others
longsuffering — enduring patience
forbearance — putting up with each other
forgiveness — actively forgiving
charity — love and affection toward each other

Conclusion

Has what Christ has accomplished for you on the cross been affecting your attitude and behavior?
COMMUNION
Explain “open communion”
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 KJV 1900
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
