The Apostle Paul knew that the Church at Ephesus had the potential to spread the gospel throughout Asia. He spent 2 years with them, but was later imprisoned in Rome. From there he wrote this letter, which I believe was his way of equipping them to be disciples who make disciples. Paul was bound, but not the gospel as it did go throughout much of Asia.
